One of his more memorable GRP dates of the 1990s, Dance of the Soul finds Ramsey Lewis playing mostly acoustic piano on a variety of material. The CD's main focus is accessible, yet creative, jazz-pop, though Lewis detours into gospel on "Mercy and Grace," classical on the acoustic solo piano piece "Cante Hondo (Deep Song)," and jazzy R&B on a remake of Teena Marie's 1981 gem "Portuguese Love" (which features the big-voiced singer Donica Henderson). The Chicagoan has some nice solos on melodic instrumentals like "Sub Dude," "Cancion," and the Joe Sample-ish "Love's Serenade," all of which demonstrate that commercial jazz-pop can be creative as well as highly accessible. In fact, these are the sorts of instrumentals one should use to turn pop and R&B fans on to jazz -- they're easy to absorb, but have a lot more substance than the type of mindless "elevator Muzak" that many pop instrumentalists favored in the 1990s. Although not a masterpiece, Dance of the Soul is a decent effort that has more ups than downs. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

Only a little over a year old at the time of recording, this incarnation of the Ramsey Lewis Trio -- Ramsey Lewis, Cleveland Eaton, and Maurice White (later of Earth, Wind & Fire) -- were well on their way to the pristine and symbiotic gel that would define their style. They were, however, still undergoing that process when they laid down this "live" set at San Francisco's Basin Street West club in July 1967. It's that somewhat formative vibe that makes this particular performance such a complete and utter joy. Dancing in the Street is this trio's recorded debut and, across a wide range of covers and styles, it's a captivating portrait of contemporary jazz. The title track, a cover of the Martha & the Vandellas R&B classic, is so smooth and stylish that it nearly outshines the original. "Django," meanwhile, is a delightful tribute to the Belgian Gypsy musician Django Reinhardt. Lewis pays further homage to the greats across his cover of the Billy Taylor classic "Mood for Mendes." Also of note is the Ramsey Lewis Trio's rendition of the country song "You Don't Know Me." Originally a hit for Jerry Vale in 1956, it was revisited in 1960 by Lenny Welch and again in 1962 by Ray Charles, and it's from that great bluesman's version that Lewis took his cue with this wonderful jam. These three musicians are a joy to hear, and it's within their far-reaching vision, and the effortless incorporation of so many styles into contemporary jazz, that they were -- and remain -- among the genre's finest. ~ Amy Hanson, All Music Guide

The heart of Ambrosia's soft rock success was found in two major arteries: super-polished, smooth productions easily accessible for the top of the pop charts, and the songwriting skill and vocals of lead singer David Pack. After nearly a two-decade sabbatical from releasing any new material, Pack returns with an arsenal of '70s arena rock all-stars making guest cameos: Ann Wilson, Timothy B. Schmidt, and Steve Perry all make guest appearances to accentuate songs that are predictably light and accessible. But these guest contributions only help already well-written and performed songs ascend to a level of quality that Ambrosia fans have come to expect. Enlisting the dynamic smooth jazz duo of Russ Freeman and David Benoit for arrangements and production helps out at points, and traces of their two collaborative projects find their way into The Secret of Movin' On. But the album is certainly not without fault. A re-recording of "Biggest Part of Me" and a hideous remake of "You're the Only Woman" are nowhere near as good as the originals and only serve as a reminder of how good Ambrosia truly was, especially in comparison to this coffeehouse fodder (double irony points for a re-recording of a song that includes the lyric "You can't go back and change the way things are"). And the duet on "A Brand New Start" needs less Pack and a lot more Steve Perry, who only provides glimpses and traces of vocal contributions in the background. It's an above-average adult contemporary album from an artist finding his way back to the top of the soft rock heap. ~ Rob Theakston, All Music Guide

“Yes, that's jazz,” comments the singer and pianist Diane Schuur between songs; yes, it is indeed a reading of high quality and great purity of jazz that this artist, too little known in our country, highlights. Diane Schuur, who has collaborated with no less than the Mel Lewis Big Band and the Count Basie Orchestra, and is in line with Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan or Anita O'Day; even Dinah Washington could be her model even if it is not obvious from this concert. Diane Schuur, whose nickname is Deedles, was born in 1953, blind from birth, and is indeed an outstanding vocalist who could hold her own against any of the artists whom the record companies “sell” us today. The characteristics of her vocal art? They can be summed up in a few phrases that revolve around fabulous accuracy, steady tempos, fluidity of speech, perfect articulation. With a mischievous, even cheeky air, she improvises in scat, begins breathtaking dialogues with the instrumentalists, her voice becoming the equal of an instrument. For this concert, she dedicates herself to a repertoire of fifteen songs, culminating in the highly enjoyable duet with trumpeter Maynard Ferguson on the two standards "Just Friends" and "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing).” Philippe Lesage
