This documentary offers a careful use of the epistolary of the “protagonist”, entrusting to letters written and received by Chopin the task of explaining the narrative junctures of his life. This documentary offers a careful use of the epistolary of the “protagonist”, entrusting to letters written and received by Chopin the task of explaining the narrative junctures of his life. The writings are interpreted by Fabrizio Bentivoglio and Margherita Buy (who provides the voice for George Sand, the French writer with whom Chopin had a relationship). Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) was born in Zelazowa Wola, near Warsaw, in a setting far from the limelight of the great musical tradition, but at the same time he absorbs the winds that blow in from that same tradition. His education is the fruit of Polish culture and cannot be separated from that, but he also feels the influence of the three main cultures of the time: Italian, Austro-Germanand French. This documentary describes the places that provided the basis for the young composer’s imagination, from the capital Warsaw to rural Poland, where Chopin spends part of his childhood and is formed as a man and a musician, on to Paris, theatre of the second half of the musician’s life. The film evokes the almost Gogolian atmosphere of the Polish countryside: Zelazowa Wola, Szafarnia, Torun are described through documentary footage that restores the suggestiveness, which is still alive today, of the folklore Chopin was so attached to. Without forgetting, naturally, Warsaw, with the world’s most important piano competition, preserves the memory of one of the most important characters of European culture.

George London was one of the most impressive bass-baritones of the postwar era. He sang on the side of Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi and Nicolai Gedda, to name only a few, and captured the audience’s hearts with his distinctive voice and his charismatic stage presence. Way too early he had to stop his singing career due to a vocal chord disease. The film portrays this exceptional artist in all its diversity, shows rare archive footage of his great performances as an opera singer but also as an interpreter of traditional spirituals and operetta. Another important element of the film are interviews with his widow Nora London, with former colleagues, experts and current stars of the opera scene as Neil Shicoff, Catherine Malfitano and Deborah Polaski, who have been taught by George London, supported in their career by the George London Foundation or see themselves as his followers.

“Success has not gone to his head. He’s the same Zubin now, as I knew him as he was a little kid.” – Yusuf Hamied (Childhood Friend)Zubin Mehta is one of the world`s leading conductors. Born and raised in India, he is a brilliant symbol of today`s cross-cultural world and a living proof of the power of music to bridge differentcultures and to break social and political barriers. On the occasion of Zubin Mehta’s 80th birthday, Filmmaker Bettina Ehrhardt creates a tender homage to this exceptional artist, who is Music Director for Life of the Israel Philharmonic as well as the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Conductor Laureate of the Bayerisches Staatsorchester, the Münchner Philharmoniker and the Wiener Philharmoniker. The film deals with an artist loved by audiences and musicians alike because he radiates warmth and humanity, in both his music and his life.
