Louis Sarno's notes on liner card (ms ink) – 'Tracks 1-3: from Limboku night 6 May 1993 at Yandoumbé. I do not remember what the occasion for this limboku was - if indeed I ever knew the occasion. Louis Sarno's notes on liner card (ms ink) – 'YEYI '89, '91. 56'
Louis Sarno's notes on liner card (ms ink) – 'Tracks 1-6: from Yeyi at dawn, April '89 at Mombongo hunting camp. Yeyi is another form of women's music. It means literally “yodel". Unlike Limboku, there is no conjuring up of a spirit, simply the most gorgeous singing in pure Bayaka style, unaccompanied by anything but occasional clapping. Usually music of the night, it is sung by a group of women who move through the camp or settlement. This yeyi took place at dawn in the forest just beyond the circumference of our hunting camp. I began recording from a distance, but once it was light the women (about 7, plus a young girl) moved over to my microphones. Total time: 31 1/2m. 1) 4 1/2m. 2) 2 1/2m. 3) 7m. 4) 13 1/2m. 5) 2m. 6) 2m, end Yeyi mid-April '89 Mombongo. Tracks 7-17: from Yeyi night of 25 Oct. 1991 at Yandoumbé. This Yeyi began during the dying moments of a storm in a far corner of Yandoumbé. Between 2 and 12 women took part (women joined as the yeyi continued). I recorded from the window of my house. Among the main participants are: Poli, Nyomba, Eloka, Japa and Poli's mother, Sopo. Once the rain stopped they wandered throughout Yandoumbé, with their beautiful voices bringing benediction on the settlement. Total time: 1h 01 1/2m. Track times: 7) 4m. 8) 8 1/2m. 9) 16 1/2m. 10) 9 1/2m. 11) 6 1/2m. 12) 2m. 13) 2 1/2m. 14) 1/2m. 15) 2 1/2m. 16) 4m. 17) 6m, end Yeyi 25 Oct. '91 Yandoumbé. Track 18-23: from Yeyi 29 Oct. '91 at Yandoumbé. This Yeyi involved many of the same women as the one before. I recorded only the final minutes, from pre-dawn until the end of dawn. Yandoumbé was waking up, so much more noise is in this recording. Total time: 28 1/2m. Track times: 18) 14m. 19) 6m. 20) 3 1/2m. 21) 2m. 22) 1m. 23) 2m, end Yeyi 29 Oct. '91 Yandoumbé. END DAT 56'

Louis Sarno's notes on liner card (ms ink) – 'Tracks 1-5: continued from DAT 62. Gano 7 April '93 behind Yandoumbé. Total time: 13m. Track times: 1) 3m. 2) 2m. 3) 3m. 4) 2 1/2m. 5) 2 1/2m, end Gano 7 April '93 behind Yandoumbé. Tracks 6-8: from the night of 19 May 1993 at Losi forest hunting camp. There is a tradition of long epic-like stories (epic-like in that they may go on most of the night) told by someone, a man or a woman. The storyteller assumes the voices of various characters, and songs intersperse the long narration, to which the rapt audience may sing along. The one here was told by Makuti and had a chimpanzee as main character. The listeners comment and react to the events of the story without inhibition. Kumba, god of the forest, also features in these stories, as do various mokoondi (spirits). They take place in a mythical long ago when the animals were people and could talk. After 5 or 6 minutes in track 8, a new story begins in which the main character is a large marsh bird, a rail the Bayaka call kembi. Or is it just a continuation of the first story, with a new character? And are the stories completely free improvisations, or are the basic plots established myths of culture? I don't know. Total time: 1h 22 1/2m. Track times: 6) 30 1/2m. 7) 4 1/2m. 8) 47 1/2m, end Gano Makuti 19 May 1993 Losi. Tracks 9-12: from "Gano Keta" (dream fable?), 19 Dec. very late at night, at Yandoumbé 1993. This sort of gano is often sung by a husband and wife as they lie in bed together late at night. Here, two men (Mosio & Ndoko) sing gano-Keta as they lie down in the mbanjo (men's open-sided shelter) late at night (track 9). When they learned I was recording, they called me over, sat up and sang some more, now joined by one or two others. Total time: 14m. Makusé is performed at the start of a forest sojourn, to bring food to the camp, to ensure that the forest sojourn will be fruitful. It begins at the crack of dawn. A fire is lit at the base of a big tree. Food procuring items such as carrying baskets and spears are leaned up against the tree. The participants (men, women, and children) encircle the tree fanning the fire in unison with leafy branches. With their axes men strike the tree with loud thumps (symbolizing honey gathering). Once the sun is up the music ends with shouts of defiances and curses at all of the things of village (as opposed to forest) life. Track 7: Makusé, dawn 5 Feb. 1994 at Kongana. Time: 15 1/2m.
