The film follows her remarkable journey of transformation and discovery as she returns to Guatemala in search of her heritage and ultimately joins efforts to bring the perpetrators of the massacre to justice and to promote peace and reconciliation in her native country.Dominga Sic Ruiz was nine years old when, during the bloody Guatemalan civil war, she escaped while paramilitary and army forces murdered her mother and 76 other women and 107 children in the Maya village of Rio Negro. She was eventually adopted and grew up in small-town America, where she became a "normal" teenager named Denese and later married. She buried her past so deeply it became transformed in adulthood into doubts and nightmares, until events brought her to face the truth.Beautifully photographed in Iowa and amid the stunning landscapes of the Guatemalan highlands, the film follows her emotional reconnection with lost relatives, with a rich indigenous culture, and with the violent history in which her beloved adopted country -- the United States -- played a sinister role. Dominga joins the Maya community in the dangerous effort to demand the exhumation of a clandestine mass grave, and later provides testimony in a landmark genocide case, thus becoming part of a global grassroots struggle for justice and human rights."Discovering Dominga" is a compelling and inspiring story that will engage student interest and provoke reflection and discussion in a wide variety of courses in Latin American studies, cultural anthropology, Third World studies, human rights, women's studies, American history and studies, and sociology. They know that the journey could cost them their lives but they will risk anything to make it to America. Every month, more than 5,000 unaccompanied children are arrested in the United States after crossing the Mexican border. Joao and Anthony, both 15 and from Honduras, have decided to jump a freight train from Mexico. But on the American side of the border, heavily armed private militia hunt migrants in the desert. They also run the real risk of getting lost in the desert and dying of thirst - a fate that befalls thousands every year. And young girls attempting the crossing are prey to the cartels, who force them into prostitution. More than 130,000 children were arrested in the past years for attempting the crossing. How many others disappeared on the road to the American Dream?

It is the engaging portrait of Emil Synek, the filmmaker's grandfather, who was a revered playwright, journalist and politician in Czechoslovakia during the era of the Second World War and the Communist takeover. When he was filmed, Emil Synek in his eighties, lived in exile in Paris with his constant companion, a poodle Fifi. Emil's life was shaped by the politics of Europe. When the Nazis invaded his country he fled to London, where he joined the exiled government of Eduard Benes. In post-war Czechoslovakia he served as a diplomat until the Communist takeover of 1948 forced him and his family to flee again to the West. All his works and any mention of his life was obliterated from his country's history. His story echoes Czechoslovakia's struggle for freedom. It gained independence in 1918 only to lose it to Hitler's invading army. In 1945 the exiled government was restored but was overthrown three years later by the Communists. In this documentary on post-war El Salvador, people from all over the country recount the nightmare of the twelve-year civil war that came to an end in 1992. The filmmaker and his crew traveled throughout the country interviewing people who had witnessed some of the grimmest events of the war. He goes to the village of Mozote where American-trained soldiers of the Salvadoran army massacred 800 citizens. Similar round ups of civilians took place in many areas and we meet survivors who recall the loss of their loved ones. In the mountains of Guazapa and FLMN guerrilla shows where he lived and how he fought for six years before being captured by government forces. A student describes what happened to him and his teachers at the University of Central America. Jesuit priests were leaders in the struggle for justice and often targeted for assassination by the government forces. In contrast to these testimonies, a member of the upper class complains that the church had become mixed up in politics. Although scars from the war remain vivid, people are rebuilding their lives. Farmland is being cleared and replanted, new construction is taking place in the city. In Uganda, gender violence is a serious, hidden problem as a means of solving domestic disputes, jealousy feuds, business, and political differences. Knives, guns, and physical attacks are the most commonly used weapons, but the most horrific weapon is acid. A hired killer purchases acid for less than {dollar}1.00 and will throw a bottle of acid onto a person’s face and body with the intent of disfiguring and disabling the victim forever. Reported acid attack victims in Uganda number at around five hundred, though thousands are undocumented and remain hidden in their villages outside of public view. Twelve acid attack survivors refused to remain hidden and isolated. Through the encouragement of Hanifa and Ritah, both acid attack survivors, they all met for the first time on June 25, 2014, in a small village in Uganda. This was the first time they removed their scarves, veils, and masks in public and shared their stories of survival and hopes for the future. The film "Facing the Future" captured this momentous day as each survivor bravely faced the camera to tell their story. They talked about their former lives, recalled their brutal attacks, and how they survived the painful journey back to recovery. They also spoke about the reasons behind such brutal attacks. Most of all, the film captures the survivors’ dreams and hopes for their future, and shows their strength and desire to regain their dignity and human rights.

The camera zooms in on his dirty and delicate fingernails holding his trademark cigar while he tells a story of Símon Bolivar and offers tactical advice to guerrilla warriors throughout the Third World.
The film contains rare and fascinating archive footage of the Bay of Pigs invasion and scenes of Che Guevara alongside interviews with political prisoners.
