During the mid-1800s, the Napa River brought people to Napa City from around the world, attracted by the beauty and bounty of the valley. Riverboat captains played a major role in creating the material wealth of the city as their vessels plied the waters of San Francisco Bay carrying freight and passengers. During the mid-1800s, the Napa River brought people to Napa City from around the world, attracted by the beauty and bounty of the valley. Riverboat captains played a major role in creating the material wealth of the city as their vessels plied the waters of San Francisco Bay carrying freight and passengers. As the powerhouse of industry, the river attracted several tanneries that needed water to make the now famous “Nappa” leather. Napa became a leather colony with the growth of shoe, glove, and glue factories. The river became a key transportation artery, and its channel became the focus of greater dredging to allow larger ships to anchor downtown. No longer a natural river able to meander, it frequently overran its banks, flooding towns. Industry, agricultural runoff, and population growth caused the Napa River to become polluted and neglected into the 20th century. Today, the Napa River is the centerpiece of downtown renewal. A “Living River” strategy is bringing back its vitality along with fish and wildlife populations, helping the river to regain its importance.

Located in southern Rensselaer County, Nassau has witnessed great change since its incorporation in 1819. Nassau chronicles how the town transformed itself from an area tied to agriculture and industry to a bedroom community for larger population centers in the Capital Region. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, housing developments were built to accommodate the growing neighborhoods. With those changes came increased traffic, need for larger schools, and business expansion. America’s longest highway, Historic Route 20, was carved out of Nassau’s historic paths and primitive turnpike. It created more streamlined transportation routes across the entire state. Nassau serves as a visual repository of community values and history to illustrate everyday life and the people that lived it.

In 1682, John Sharpless settled in Nether Providence Township on a 1,000-acre tract of land along Ridley Creek that had been granted to him by William Penn. Other settlers soon followed, establishing Nether Providence as a small, successful, farming community. Over the next two centuries, Nether Providence grew into a thriving manufacturing center with 14 operating mills along the township's two creeks. At the turn of the 19th century, Nether Providence became a summer resort area rivaling the Main Line of Philadelphia, with such famous residents as Dr. Horace Howard Furness, a well-regarded Shakespearean scholar and the brother of architect Frank Furness, and Alexander Kelly McClure, the owner of the Philadelphia Times and an assistant adjunct general appointed by Pres. Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. In 2007, Wallingford, the largest community in Nether Providence, was named by Money Magazine as the ninth best place to live in the United States.

The area post office was established in 1851 and called Ashleyville for founder Alfred Ashley. In 1867, New Baltimore officially became a village, and it soon prospered and grew. The village became a city in 1931 and annexed land from St. Clair County, which meant leaving the governing authority of Chesterfield Township.

From military generals on key battlefields of history to floor generals on Indiana’s beloved basketball courts, it has made its mark. Consider that New Castle has been home to high-ranking Civil War, World War I, and modern-day military officials. One of the earliest automobile factories was built here, the iconic American Beauty Rose was grown here, and the collectible Hoosier kitchen cabinet was made here. Not one, but two Mr. Basketballs grew up in New Castle and generated sell-out crowds in what has been documented as the world’s largest and finest high school gymnasium. Current US president Barack Obama, former US president Bill Clinton, former first lady Barbara Bush, and former US vice presidents Dan Quayle and Charles Fairbanks have all made headline-making visits here.

City Park's 1,300 acres cradle the largest collection of mature live oaks in the nation. Established in 1854, it is one of the country's largest urban parks (457 acres larger than New York's City's Central Park and two years older) and contains the highest earthen elevation in New Orleans. City Park has welcomed as many as 11 million visitors per year who walk among 50 species of trees, including bald cypress, southern magnolia, and pine, and the thousands of ancient southern live oaks. At one mile wide and three miles long, the park's 11 miles of lagoons (the largest in the shape of Lake Pontchartrain) are stocked with a variety of fish. Neoclassical, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Arts and Crafts, Mission, and modern architecture complete City Park. It is a precious and beloved jewel.

Spring weekends find the area filled with vehicles bearing canoes and kayaks traveling to float the incomparable Buffalo River and, as year-round backpackers head out for scores of trails through the most striking wilderness in the eastern half of the nation. Amidst the scenery, long before the designation of the national river, Newton County was home to self-sufficient pioneers who began arriving in the early 1800s to build log cabins and farms to support their families—a spirit that remains today.
