The recordings presented here belong to the artist’s period of maturity. They are Quiroga’s last artistic testimony and we can appreciate why he was revered so much among his equals. They are all violin recordings accompanied by piano.
The sound is of great personality and technical perfection. The quality can be perceived in the extremely clear harmonic sections, it is like listening to a whistle; perfect intonation, especially clear in the double stops, octaves and chord music; extreme abilities; lyric phrasing... We can appreciate his maturity with a sound that possesses much more circumspection and a more confident and crystal-clear diction.
Most of the recordings are pieces with a Hispanic theme. The Zapateado Op.23 no.2 by Pablo Sarasate was said to be better than the version carried out by the very author of the piece. One of the most highlighted pieces in this volume is Le Ronde des Lutins Op.25 by Antonio Bazzini, brilliant execution, with a technical arsenal that is overwhelming. In Introducción y Tarantella he unfurls a collection of technical fireworks that was greatly demanded by his public.
Quiroga and Leman’s mutual understanding is apparent in these recordings, reaching an exceptional and unusual inner dialogue. The interrelation of phrasing, dynamics, rubatos, etc., is well beyond their epoch, in which accompaniment was frequently a mere decoration and the soloist wanted to play without taking it too much into account.
This record is part of the A Tiracolo collection, which restores historical recordings of Galician music (from the northeast of Spain). This collection recovers the Galician musical heritage in a digital format, principally recordings made between 1904 and 1960. It includes an unedited and rigorous 18-page documentary study, featuring an abundant amount of photographic material, originally from museums and private collections. The booklet has been written in four languages: Galician as the main language, Spanish, English and French.
