A film about African women is a rarity, even more, one made by an African woman. In Femmes Aux Yeux Ouverts, award-winning Togolese filmmaker, Anne-Laure Folly presents portraits of contemporary African women from four West African nations: Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal and Benin. The film shows how African women are speaking out and organizing around five key issues: marital rights, reproductive health, female genital mutilation, women's role in the economy and political rights.Femmes Aux Yeux Ouverts introduces us to many unforgettable African women. we meet a woman who has taken refuge in a convent from a forced marriage. We join a community health worker demonstrating condom use in a marketplace. An activist describes why it is more effective to attack female "circumcision" as a health issue rather than as a women's rights issue. Women entrepreneurs, who control trade in major cities explain how they have formed their own mutual aid societies. A Malian woman, who lost her daughter in the 1991 pro-democracy demonstrations, describes how women continue to play a key role in the Malian revolution.Femmes Aux Yeux Ouverts shows how women are organizing at the grassroots level to insure their participation in the continent's current move towards democracy. Internationally-renowned artist Fiore De Henriquez flew in the face of 20th Century gender norms, blazing her own trail and shaping her own identity in the art world across Europe and the United States. But there was more to Fiore than sculpture. While battling with - and eventually accepting - her intersexuality, duality became prominent in her art, her life and her explosive love affairs. In the 1960s, when the world was being swept away by modern art, Fiore was building a reputation as a figurative sculptor in the classical style. Privately, she was forging a body of work that was visceral and sometimes surreal. Professionally, she was making her mark in a very male world. Personally, she was managing a constantly shifting gender identity. Hers is an epic story. Having endured an abusive elder brother, Fiore joined the Italian partisans during WWII (disguised as a man) to rescue Jews from the Nazis. She was captured but escaped across the Alps. Moving to post-war England, she found herself amongst Princess Margaret's set, sculpting HRH the Queen Mother, Igor Stravinsky, Peter Ustinov, Oprah Winfrey, Laurence Olivier, and President Kennedy among many others. "Fiore: In Love with Clay" examines her life and her art through the eyes of those closest to her. She died in 2004 in the Tuscan village she had saved and transformed into an arts center.

Carrington rebelled from her upper class background nearly from birth. After being presented at Buckingham Palace, she escaped to London to study art. What followed would transform her iconography forever. This is the only film of Carrington’s life and work produced in the United States covers her entire oeuvre, includes rare personal footage from the 1940s through the 21st Century, and includes a fanciful depiction of her famous 1939 short story, “The Debutante.”
