The Waffen SS began as Hitler's elite bodyguard and grew into one of the most formidable fighting forces of Nazi Germany. Although part of the infamous SS - and indelibly linked with the excesses of the feared Gestapo, the concentration camps, and the extermination squads, the men of the SS saw themselves as combat soldiers, respected for their courage, feared for their ruthlessness and fanaticism. For these were political soldiers; mature men, recruited for their physical perfection and pure Aryan ancestry. They were drilled in Nazi ideology, indoctrinated to believe in themselves as the master race and their enemies as subhuman. They became the cornerstone of the German defences, who carried on fighting, even when all hope was gone. But they are remembered for their brutality. They killed captured British, Canadian and American soldiers in cold blood, and massacred unarmed French, Belgian and Russian civilians. They were Gladiators on the battlefield, who fought on against impossible odds, but the Waffen SS will forever be tarnished by the atrocities they committed as the willing servants of an evil regime.

A thrilling film which uses the written accounts of its perpetrators to show why The Gunpowder Plot remains the world's boldest ever terror conspiracy. Remarkably, the capture and relentless interrogation of eight of the 13 Gunpowder Plotters were all recorded in written accounts made at the time, and means that this docu-drama can use verbatim conversations and reactions to recreate every dramatic step of the two-year plot. Using drama sequences, location filming, the contemporary accounts and interviews with a number of present-day experts, The Gunpowder Plotters is an immersive and uniquely authentic thriller which has real global significance in the new age of terror which followed from 9/11.

Henry’s father had won and defended the crown in battle, to Henry the mark of true regal legitimacy. He was determined to emulate his father and win even greater glory. But to wage the war Henry desired meant emerging from the councillors he had inherited from his father to be his own man. This episode traces Henry’s quest to become a major player in Europe, his successes at the Battle of the Spurs and the Field of the Cloth of Gold, and his eventual humiliation after the Battle of Pavia. Throughout these years his relationship with the brilliant, Machiavellian Thomas Wolsey was central to his reign. But even Wolsey could not disguise the relative impotence of England and her monarchy when compared to the great European powers. By 1525 Henry was having a classic mid-life crisis, with the all too familiar desire to replace his ageing spouse with a younger model. But Henry’s infatuation with Anne Boleyn would change the face of England and alter European power politics for centuries to come.

In Vietnam, one of the last communist nations, Ho Chi Minh remains the father figure for the nation. For many in the West there remains a fascination with Uncle Ho, the frail, idealistic leader who against seemingly insurmountable odds humiliated two of the world's strongest armies, the American and the French. This film, based on newsreel footage and interviews with contemporaries, traces the story of his life. Born into a Mandarin family in 1890 when Indochina was part of the French empire, he gravitated towards Paris like many in his generation. There he founded the Indochinese Communist Party, calling for an independent Indochina composed of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The following years were spent between Russia and Asia where he learned guerrilla warfare from Mao Tse Tung. His big chance came during World War II when the Japanese occupied Indochina. The film goes on to show how his army, the Viet Minh, drove them out and then went on to fight the French for control of the country. Independence for North Vietnam was achieved with the defeat of the French at Dien Bien Phu. He never lived to see the victory over the Americans or the unification of Vietnam. A moving account of Hitler's attempt to destroy European Jewry, this program offers a rare personal perspective. Diaries and poems written by men, women and children in the concentration camps help viewers comprehend the horrors of Nazi Germany-and enduring spirit of those who fought for human dignity throughout one of history's darkest chapters. Viewers hear excerpts from Nazi testimony at the Nuremberg Trial, as Eichmann, Biberstein and others give dispassionate accounts of mass death-and plead 'not guilty' to charges. The program traces a complex historical path of European anti-Semitism and examines increasingly determined persecution of the Jews in Nazi Germany, including the violent turning point of Kristalnacht, and the formulation of the Final Solution.
