Bill Ayers was born into privilege and is today a highly respected educator. In the late 1960s he was a young pacifist who helped to found one of the most radical political organizations in U.S. history, the Weather Underground. Demonstrators with their hands on their heads, arrested during a march by between 20,000 and 30,000 pro-Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN) Algerians, are guarded by policemen as they wait outside a police station in Puteaux, outside Paris, on October 17, 1961 in Paris. French police, under orders from the head of the Parisian police, Maurice Papon, attacked the illegal but peaceful demonstration. After 37 years of denial, the French government acknowledged 40 deaths in 1998, although there are estimates of over 200. More than ten thousand Algerians were subsequently arrested and detained in various pre-planned locations (the Palais des Sports, the Parc des Expositions, the Stade Coubertin, the Centre d'Identification at Vincennes) for nearly four days.
