Social psychologist James Waller uncovers the internal and external factors that can lead ordinary people to commit extraordinary acts of evil. Waller offers a sophisticated and comprehensive psychological view of how anyone can potentially participate in heinous crimes against humanity. He outlines the evolutionary forces that shape human nature, the individual dispositions that are more likely to engage in acts of evil, and the context of cruelty in which these extraordinary acts can emerge. Eyewitness accounts are presented at the end of each chapter. In this second edition, Waller has revised and updated eyewitness accounts and substantially reworked Part II of the book, removing the chapter about human nature and evolutionary adaptations, and instead using this evolutionary perspective as a base for his entire model of human evil.

Two decades of armed conflict between the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and the Ugandan government in Northern Uganda, has created an unprecedented humanitarian crisis and regional instability. With nearly two million civilians displaced from their homes into so-called "protected camps," Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) face heightened insecurity, appalling living conditions and lack the very basic means of subsistence. While the LRA has committed war crimes against the displaced population, including the abduction of some twenty thousand children, the Ugandan People's Defence Forces (UPDF) who were mobilized to protect civilians have also committed human rights violations including arbitrary detention, torture and rape.
Through the personal stories of IDP torture survivors, Between Two Fires advocates for official acknowledgement of abuses committed by the UPDF, redress for torture survivors, and the strengthening of national legislation against torture.

This report, which documents only one short part of that two-decade past, is not an attempt to remedy the situation. This report is not a comprehensive history of armed conflict in Afghanistan over the last two decades or a full accounting of the crimes of this period. Nor could it be. Complete documentation of the most serious atrocities committed in Afghanistan in the 1980s and 1990s, when it is accomplished, will require broad-based and long-term efforts backed fully by both the Afghan government and the international community. When such a history is written, it will not fit within the covers of a book; it will fill bookshelves. Rather, this report focuses on a single year in Afghanistan’s history: the Afghan year of 1371 (April 1992 to March 1993), immediately succeeding the collapse of the Soviet-backed government in Kabul. It also focuses on events in a single place: Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, and its immediate environs.
