When the Bolsheviks came to power in 1917, they believed that under socialism the family would 'wither away.' They envisioned a society in which communal dining halls, daycare centres, and public laundries would replace the unpaid labour of women in the home. Yet by 1936 legislation designed to liberate women from their legal and economic dependence had given way to increasingly conservative solutions aimed at strengthening traditional family ties and women's reproductive role. This book explains the reversal, focusing on how women, peasants, and orphans responded to Bolshevik attempts to remake the family, and how their opinions and experiences in turn were used by the state to meet its own needs.

The food problems now facing the world—scarcity and starvation, contamination and illness, overabundance and obesity—are both diverse and complex. What are their causes? How severe are they? Why do they persist? What are the solutions? In three volumes that serve as valuable teaching tools and have been designed to complement the textbook Food Policy for Developing Countries by Per Pinstrup-Andersen and Derrill D. Watson II, they call upon the wisdom of disciplines including economics, nutrition, sociology, anthropology, environmental science, medicine, and geography to create a holistic picture of the state of the world's food systems today. Volume III of the Case Studies addresses global institutions and international trade policies.

Exports of grains, soybeans and related products have been restricted by the United States on three occasions prior to January 4,1980. The study examines the causes and consequences of periodic actions by the United States to restrict exports of agricultural commodities. In none of the cases examined does there appear to have been a long-run reduction in demand for U.S. exports as a result of the trade restrictions. The loss in overseas soybean markets after 1973 would have occurred even without the 1973 U.S. export embargo. Despite restrictions on sales to the Soviet Union in 1974 and 1975, that country remained a major market for U.S. grain.
