Resourcefully put together, "The American Way of Life" is built up with excellent footage from award-winning THE BIG PICTURE episodes produced since 1957. For three consecutive years, the George Washington Honor Medal has been presented to the series by the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge for its achievement in bringing about a better understanding of the American Way of Life. Using the original soundtracks which featured the voices of Raymond Massey and Alexander Scourby, Host M/Sgt. Stuart Queen individually introduces the film episodes. The first award-winning picture, "Operation Mercy," was made in 1957. It told the story of how Hungarian freedom fighters who escaped from the Russians were helped by the United Sates Army when they arrived at Camp Kilmer, N.J. The next award came the following year, 1958, with a film titled: "Ottumwa, U.S.A." It was the story of a small town in the Midwest that is a living example of everything the American Way of Life stands for. In 1959, THE BIG PICTURE won its third George Washington Honor Medal for three film presentations; the first of these recaptured tumultuous days in the life of "Eisenhower the Soldier." The second, "People to People," described how our servicemen overseas use the not-so-secret weapons of goodwill, friendship, a ready smile and a helping hand to cultivate warm personal relations with people of foreign nations. The third film, "A Debt is Honored," tells how kilted soldiers of the Black Watch, stationed in Canada, accepted a long-standing invitation to be the guest of the 111th Infantry Regiment in Philadelphia. To tell what Freedoms Foundation is and what THE BIG PICTURE has done to further the cause of freedom, Wilber M. Brucker, Secretary of the Army, and Dr. Kenneth Wells, President of the Foundation, are introduced.
