In 1992 the filmmaker Christine Choy returned to Shanghai for the first time in over thirty years: to track down the title of her family’s house. She also wanted to locate an old schoolmate. She found her quest was like going down the rabbit hole with Franz Kafka as a tour guide. Her mother had abandoned the family’s house on leaving China for the U.S. in the early 1960’s. Christine was sent to innumerable city housing authorities and agencies only to find that the house had never been registered with the city of Shanghai and the government had taken over the property when her mother left. Trying to take it back from the city now would "shame the city and therefore the country" and would be considered traitorous. Christine finally located her old girlfriend, Li Dao Wen, at the Music Conservatory after several baffling interviews with Li’s estranged relatives and innumerable fortune tellers. The filmmaker found many people in Shanghai still haunted by the ghosts of the Cultural Revolution and guarded in their speech to avoid being labeled anti-social. Her trip had become a frustrating voyage into the nature of modern China. College Adult

Directed by a Brazilian, Octavio Bezerra, Halting the Fires gives a socio/political framework to the devastation of the Amazon. Here, an area larger than the Netherlands is being burned each year. The Brazilian government, through Operation Amazon, has actually been supporting the exploitation of the natural resources. Many of the destructive activities, such as cattle ranching, are not economically viable without the subsidies the government provides. The film focuses on each of the groups - ranchers, miners, rubber tappers, loggers, Indians, and long term settlers - and shows how their activities affect the environment. It also documents the lawlessness that has characterized life on the jungle frontier. High School College Adult

During the turbulent times of the Great Depression and World War II, Franklin D. Roosevelt presided over great changes in America and the world - changes that would have been impossible without the efforts of one extraordinary man - FDR's friend and advisor, Harry Hopkins. The son of a harness maker from Iowa, and for 20 years a social worker in New York, Hopkins was invited by Roosevelt to head the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the Great Depression. Within four weeks, he had put four million people to work. He went on to help Roosevelt establish numerous federal programs that live on today. Despite failing health, he made his greatest impact during World War II. He was Roosevelt's personal envoy to Winston Churchill, executing the Lend-Lease program and helping the country mobilize for war. His unique relationship to Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin contributed to forging agreements at Teheran and Yalta. This award-winning film shows how one man's unshakable belief in America and in public service was so vital to his country. It is also a tale of grand adventure, of dangerous wartime missions executed at great risk. College Adult

In January 1913 two men disillusioned with the worlds they live in, anonymously walked the streets of Vienna. Josef Stalin was a young revolutionary exiled from his Russian homeland: Adolf Hitler a penniless failing artist. Who could believe that these two misfits would soon decide the fate of the planet? How did these two men manipulate the political climate of their respective countries to reach absolute power? Why did they send millions of innocent people needlessly to their death? This psychological dual biography exposes the chilling parallels--and the glaring differences--of these two dictators. Among the similarities is that both loved their mothers but disliked their violent fathers, both had loved ones who committed suicide. Among the differences was that Stalin feared all his associates, while Hitler trusted his inner circle. The film features exceptional footage from film archives in Russia, Germany, Eastern Europe, Great Britain and the USA including rare footage of Stalin's mother and of his funeral. Among those interviewed are Stalin's niece, Kira Alliluyeva and Wolf Rudiger Hess, son of Hitler's deputy Rudolf Hess. This fascinating documentary provides new insight into these powerful and bloodthirsty men. High School Adult

In Vietnam, one of the last communist nations, Ho Chi Minh remains the father figure for the nation. For many in the West there remains a fascination with Uncle Ho, the frail, idealistic leader who against seemingly insurmountable odds humiliated two of the world's strongest armies, the American and the French. This film, based on newsreel footage and interviews with contemporaries, traces the story of his life. Born into a Mandarin family in 1890 when Indochina was part of the French empire, he gravitated towards Paris like many in his generation. There he founded the Indochinese Communist Party, calling for an independent Indochina composed of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The following years were spent between Russia and Asia where he learned guerrilla warfare from Mao Tse Tung. His big chance came during World War II when the Japanese occupied Indochina. The film goes on to show how his army, the Viet Minh, drove them out and then went on to fight the French for control of the country. Independence for North Vietnam was achieved with the defeat of the French at Dien Bien Phu. He never lived to see the victory over the Americans or the unification of Vietnam. Phyllis and Orlando Rodríguez's lives shatter when their son, Greg dies with thousands of others in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Instead of seeking revenge, the grieving parents begin a journey of reconciliation that transforms their lives. The film follows their odyssey, which thrusts them reluctantly into the public eye as they speak out against war in Iraq and Afghanistan, oppose the death penalty for 9/11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui, and befriend his mother. Seeking to understand the nature of violence, they engage in an emotional dialog with men incarcerated at Sing Sing prison for violent crimes, who themselves seek reconciliation. Over time Phyllis and Orlando reach a new understanding of their rebellious son, who had just begun to find his way when his life was cut short. The film mixes in-depth interviews with on-location footage and striking archival photographs and video to create a deeply personal story that invites us to re-consider conventional concepts of justice and healing.
