EXTRA! SPECIAL! 70,000 SEE BOLD VENTURE WIN DERBY AS JAM BLOCKS FAVORITES John Q. Dohp Picks Winning Long-Shot But Lady Luck Still Jeers Greenpoint's Pride
CHURCHILL DOWNS, KY.--Driving hard to stave off Brevity's pounding challenge, Bold Venture crosses the line winner by a head in the sixty-second running of the Kentucky Derby. A terrific crush at the start forces Brevity across the track, dropping Granville to his knees and wrecking all prognostications based on racing form. Left in the ruck, Brevity charges up from behind in a smashing, exhausting effort to pull victory out of chaos, but loses by inches to the Morton Schwartz entry. Indian Broom finishes third, six lengths behind the leaders. The greatest throng in many years swarms into Louisville by every conceivable method of transportation. John Q. Dohp plunges on a "hot" tip, trying to recoup his losses on the Irish Sweepstakes. His nerves crumble as the bang-tails sweep around the turn into the stretch. His tip is good, he wins,--but he's chewed up his ticket in the excitement!
