It is El Salvador, 1989, three years before the end of a brutal civil war that took 75,000 lives. Maria Serrano, wife, mother, and guerrilla leader is on the frontlines of the battle for her people and her country. With unprecedented access to FMLN guerrilla camps, the filmmakers dramatically chronicle Maria's daily life in the war as she travels from village to village organizing the peasant population, and helps plan a major nationwide offensive that led the FMLN into the historic peace pact of 1992. Skirting bullets and mortar attacks, recounting a childhood of poverty and abuse by government troops, suffering the tragic loss of her daughter to enemy fire, and spending precious moments with her husband and surviving daughters, Maria brings viewers to the heart of the fight for a more just society. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the film is available for the first time on DVD. Included is an update of Maria Serrano and her family twenty years after the end of the civil war.

Memories of a Dreamer is a first person account of the hardship suffered by
a political prisoner from Chile's 1973 cruel dictatorship. Felix Mora
recounts shocking details of the torture he endured, his escape from the
dictatorship and the challenges he has faced as an exile in Italy and
Canada. The question is has Felix allowed torture and exile to shatter his
dreams of obtaining justice and being able to return to Chile? Or has he
used that suffering as a force to accomplish that dream?
Archival footage, dramatization and personal narratives bring to light an
emotionally jolting and inspirational film, where the faces of terror and
courage are apparent not only in the subject's words, but also in the way
the audience will associate his memories with what they see.
The film challenges the assumption that refugees can't participate in their
homeland's struggles from abroad and still build successful lives in their
new adopted countries. The film is also a testament to the lives of many
exiled Chileans who never gave up

Narrated by George Takei, Message From Hiroshima provides an inside look at life and culture in the city before the first ever atomic bomb was used. Today, where the Hon and Motoyasu rivers meet, stands the Peace Memorial Park – the former location of the Nakajima district, which once was home thousands to people and hundreds of businesses. When the first ever atomic bomb was detonated 2,000 feet above Hiroshima’s city center on August 6, 1945, all of that vanished. Seventy years later, director Masaaki Tanabe makes it his mission to revive the memory of what once was by interviewing hibakusha (survivors) and former residents. These heart wrenching testimonials, along with computer-generated recreations of restaurants, shoe stores, cinemas, and the famous Industrial Promotion Hall, takes us deep into the hustle and bustle, sights, sounds, and smells of a lost culture and people.

Messengers Without An Audience is a gripping documentary about the heroism of a handful of eyewitnesses who brought the first devastating reports about the Nazi atrocities to the West. Why did such a large proportion of the world ignore the genocide of millions of civilians in Europe? Did people not believe what was happening in Europe or was their indifference plain anti-Semitism? These questions are addressed in the documentary through interviews with four men who tried to warn the world: Jan Karski, Gerhart Riegner, Jan Nowak and Wladislav Bartoszewski. The documentary examines the reasons for ignoring the Nazi's murderous actions. Anti-Semitism was common at the time not only in Europe but among high officials of the American State Department. Was it shared by President Roosevelt? We do know that the State Department suppressed information, delayed action and directed consulates in the field to refuse refugees life-saving visas. Also interviewed are William Slany, the former Chief Historian of the State Department and Stuart Eizenstat, former U.S. Under Secretary of State. Slany's is the first testimony by a former top official of the Department. He speaks candidly about the catastrophic mistakes and the significant anti-Semitic attitude of that era. Stuart Eizenstat who published the Nazi-Gold Reports, discusses American responsibility for this tragic history. College Adult

The bombing of the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, by a nation he knew only by name, thrust nine-year-old Minoru Fukushima into a world of racism so malevolent he would be forced to leave Canada, the land of his birth. Like thousands of other Japanese Canadians, Minoru and his family were branded as an enemy of Canada, dispatched to internment camps in the interior of British Columbia, and finally deported to Japan. Directed by Michael Fukushima, Minoru's son, the film artfully combines classical animation with archival material. The memories of the father are interspersed with the voice of the son, weaving a tale of suffering and survival, of a birthright lost and recovered.

The Japanese subjugation of the capital of China in 1937-38 has been called "The Rape of Nanjing" or the "Nanjing Atrocity." It is considered one of the most brutal, sadistic acts of war in modern history and caused psychological repercussions to succeeding generations of Chinese. This documentary recounts the historical events leading up to the terrifying occupation: the growth of China’s capital city, Nanjing; the expansionist ambitions of Japan; and the large Japanese army, intent on revenge after meeting fierce resistance by the Chinese army in the defense of Shanghai. Archival film footage depicts the full horror of the genocide in Nanjing, in which some 300,000 people were killed and 80,000 women were raped, in a one month period. These distant wartime events take on a deeper meaning when the film focuses on the effect the occupation had on one Nanjing family, the Wangs. Wang Ping recounts how his father and mother survived the war by hiding in the International Safety Zone set up by the American and German embassies. However, the terror his mother experienced during the Japanese occupation and the sadness caused by the loss of several family members, affected her so severely that she became mentally ill. Her granddaughter speaks movingly about how this depression affects her family even today. A great-grandson remembers his great-grandmother looking under the bed for "Japanese devils" every night before bedtime. The mental anguish caused by the Rape of Nanjing has lasted for sixty-four years and continues today. NOTE: This film contains graphic images of war victims. College Adult
