An atmosphere that allows for the act of “pure play” to help dance artists use more capacity, intellect, sense, courage, and imagination in their movement styles. Conducted by the director of The DASH Ensemble, Gregory Dolbashian, the class is a highly developed series of improvisational tools and games that warms and pushes both the mind and the body to break habits and fulfill more presence. These exercises are all methods that Gregory has developed and utilized to create movement with The DASH. The artists learn confidence not just in themselves but also in the environment that they are a part of. Games and tasks work both on the individual and in tandem, so that Flow Space creates a community for progress, inspiration, and most of all, discovery.

Using improvisational and set warm-ups, this class will focus on the volume and weight inside the body and its relationship to the floor and movement. Exercises that bring awareness to the feet, spine, and pelvic floor encourage the feeling of release in the limbs, allowing us to fall and suspend off center, simultaneously finding a grounded, flexible base of support. Using these physical tools, we will explore sensation, instinct, and the inherent musicality inside the body. All the while dancing, we will work toward a more grounded and direct approach to movement.

Dual Rivet’s Contemporary Floorwork class explores intense physicality through strength building techniques, attention to placement and weight, and a curiosity to move. Beginning with a warm up, across the floor, and then robust phrase work, the class emphasizes our maximum physical capacity as movers. Inspired heavily by capoeira, street dance, acrobatics, and release technique we will focus on softening and delving into safe practices while learning. The result will be momentous, seamless and sustainable movement, allowing for freedom within our form and personal exploration of style and musicality.

Designed with the intermediate contemporary dancer in mind, the foundation of this contemporary dance class is rooted in Elizabeth Gilbert's philosophy regarding the paradox of art: everything matters, and nothing matters. We use the tension of this philosophy to break through self-censorship and harmful criticism to an empowered dance experience that values refining an authentic voice above perfecting virtuosity. The class begins with a grounded warm up focused on lengthening and loosening the spine, unlocking the head and the tail, and building heat in the center. Floor work patterns are offered alongside some humor and a persistent request to make the movement what it is in your body. The culminating phrase weaves together spinal fluidity with detailed and nuanced gestural movement for a simple but sweet expression of humanity. Enjoy, and remember to make it your own!
