Louis Sarno's notes on liner card (ms ink) – 'Tracks 1-18: from Boyobi early March 1989 at Kenyé. Many bobé, including one draped in raffia, an unusual clothing for the bobé. Boyobi for hunt but also to heal the rift between Bayaka and me, due to an earlier misunderstanding. Large choir of women. Some stunning polyphony. The large women's choir was “conducted" for most of the night by Mosombo and Bakpima, two men. Another man, Engbeté, danced in front of the women, either alone or with others. Most of the rest of the men were attending to the large force of bobé active throughout most of the night. Typical build-up to the appearance of the bobé. First the songs tend to be short, with little or no follow-up esimé. The bobé voices are first heard around track 12. Thereafter character of music changes, songs grow long with extended esimé. Main bobé finally arrives in front of singers during track 15. The choir of women was at least 60, in at least three different groups seated in different directions and impossible to record all at once with only two microphones. Tinkling bell is the raffia bobé. Total time: 2h. Track times: 1) 2m. 2) 9 1/2m. 3) 2 1/2m. 4) 4 1/2m. 5) 6 1/2m. 6) 5m. 7) 6m. 8) 5 1/2m. 9) 4m. 10) 1 1/2m. 11) 6 1/2m. 12) 7m. 13) 1m. 14) 3m. 15) 10m. 16) 29 1/2m. 17) 1m. 18) 12 1/2m. END DAT 10. Louis Sarno's notes on liner card (ms ink) – 'Tracks 1-5: continuation of DAT 10, Boyobi in early March '89. Total time: 32 1/2m. Track times: 1) 16m. 2) 1 1/2m. 3) 13m. 4) 1/2m. 5) 1m, end Boyobi early March '89. Tracks 6-23. from Boyobi mid-March '89 at Kenyé. Pretty large choir of women, also Bobé took part. Occasion may have been a net hunt the next day, but surely also was the next night to be the official start of Mbina's marriage to Engulé and may have contributed to the high spirits of this Boyobi. Track 7 I've included to give an idea of the kinds of disputes that sometimes arise early in the course of a Boyobi as they psyche themselves up: the women blame the men for being too noisy and not serious about the music. The men, however, will have none of it and retort that it's the chattering women who are making all the noise. That this boyobi for the net hunt is doubling as wedding music for Mbina can be heard in track 10, which is a limboku song sung in Boyobi style, a rather unusual combination. (Limboku is the women's ceremony danced, among other occasions, the night before a woman's marriage). Total time: 1h 28m. This Boyobi continued on DAT 12. Bobé arrive during track 15. Louis Sarno's notes on liner card (ms ink) – 'Tracks 1-8: continuation of Boyobi mid-March '89. “Mbina's marriage" from DAT 11. Only now do the bobé, who appeared during the last track on DAT 11, begin to take an active part in the Boyobi. In track 4 they charge the women because the women aren't singing well and are sitting scattered about in little groups (the bobé want the women sitting all together in one group). During the esimé in track 5 more bobé antics can be heard (or rather the women's reactions to these antics). This Boyobi ends “properly", like 2 or 3 others on the earlier DATS, with bondo, the song during which traditionally the bobé give their spit (considered to have magical properties) to the Bayaka - it is the Bobé's blessing for the morrow's hunt. Total time: 1h 07 1/2m. Track times: 1) 2m. 2) 1 1/2m. 3) 1m. 4) 8 1/2m. 5) 9 1/2m. 6) 2m. 7) 35 1/2m. 8) 7 1/2m, end of mid-March Boyobi “Mbina's marriage". Tracks 9-14: From Boyobi end March in forest hunting camp at Mombongo. Music began at 4am because the Bobé began demanding it from nearby forest. The bobé were bioluminescent. The women's choir in this forest camp was much smaller than the vast choir that sometimes assembled for Boyobi at the roadside settlement of Kenyé. Percussion in this Boyobi is on pots + pans + plastic jerry-cans. Total time: 51 1/2m. Track times: 9) 1m. 10) 10 1/2m. 11) 8 1/2m. 12) 8m. 13) 7m. 14) 15m. END DAT 12. Tracks 4-10: from Boyobi early April '89 at Mombongo hunting camp. Begins at 2.a.m with Bobé moving through sleeping camp invisibly but with noise and whistles to wake everyone up for boyobi (track 4). Faulty recording but invaluable material (microphones had problems with humidity). At first only the men make the effort to get up and sing boyobi. Later women join in. Nonetheless, a fairly small choir, like a chamber music orchestra version of a symphony. I only recorded the first thirty minutes of this boyobi, but it continued into the dawn. One or two bobé appeared in camp during the early part of the ceremony, each a few spots + stripes of bioluminescence. Total time: 37 1/2m. Louis Sarno's notes on liner card (ms ink) – 'Tracks 1-20: from Boyobi songs night of 11 August '89 at Kenyé. It did not include all Kenyé residents but rather mostly women from one particular Kenyé “neighborhood". (Neighborhoods are made up of people related through blood and marriages). This boyobi was for amusement, and the drumming is cursory. As is often the case with neighborhood boyobis, as the music continued, women from other “neighborhoods" came to join in. In track 7 the women switch to limboku songs, in which one or two men join in, but in which the drumming has been abandoned. Music for amusement is frequently characterised by mixing various forms together. Track 11 is something different again. With track 12 the women return to boyobi songs. Track 16 is a new song given by the principal singer, its composer, to the newborn son of a woman named Njongé. The women are singing it for the first time. They close the night of songs with another limboku song (track 20). Louis Sarno's notes on liner card (ms ink) – 'Tracks 1-2: continuation of Boyobi (from DAT 16) 8 Sept. '89 at Sao-sao hunting camp. In track 1 I decided to let the recorder run for the full length of the cassette - 45 minutes. It provides a beautiful example of the actual progress of a boyobi, including the breaks between songs with their fragmentary singing, the exchanges between the Bayaka and the bobé (who have high, falsetto voices), and the often fluid transition between talking and singing. At 38 minutes there is a lovely moment when everyone, led by the Bobé, drums on the earth. The women's choir was scattered about in different directions, which angered the Bobé (who like to rush about in the dark every which way), who warned the women repeatedly to sit all together. Finally the bobé leave in protest, saying they won't give any animals on the morrow's hunt. Total time: 1h 04m. 1) 46m. 2) 18m, end Boyobi 8 Sept. '89 Sao-sao. Tracks 3-4. From Boyobi on morning of 13 September before the day's hunt, Sao-sao forest camp. In forest camps boyobi frequently goes on into the morning, or (as is the case here) a short one may be held beginning at dawn to ensure a successful hunt. With bobé. Total time: 37m. Track times: 3) 28m. 4) 9m, end Boyobi morning 13 Sept. '89 Sao-sao. Tracks 5-9: from Boyobi night of 13 Sept. '89 at Sao-sao hunting camp. This boyobi began with children, who even in track 8 sing a djoboko song (djoboko is their own dance form with its own mokoondi (spirit)) rather than a boyobi song.
