Musically stunning and emotionally compelling this film follows a group of Latina musicians as they break the gender barrier to perform mariachi music in America with passion and gusto. Long the purview of male musicians, the 12 member Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles was the first all female mariachi band. Since their inception in 1994, other female groups have been formed who perform professionally, expanding the popularity of the music, which is an important part of their cultural heritage. Along with a brief history of mariachi music, the film interweaves portraits of the women who often find their personal lives conflict with their desire to be full-time musicians. The issues raised are universal to women everywhere: how to balance family life with career, how to achieve equal pay, and how to deal with emotional conflict. This ethnographic documentary follows three young Dutch women in their contraceptive choices. It shows how the use of hormonal birth control for women from a young age on is normalized, institutionalized and encouraged through social norms. Since the pharmaceutical industry only produces birth control methods for women, women are also the ones that have to carry all health risks and sometimes unclear side effects. Making contraception a highly unequal responsibility. The film questions the way in which we have perceived the pill as a feminist trope – and reveals a gap of information between contraception, side effects and women’s lived experience. Hopefully to start a discussion about women’s right to make decisions about their own reproductive bodies and the institutionalized need to control it.

This simple but affecting documentary portrays a rural craftsman who makes a traditional Iranian percussion instrument called a daf. All able-bodied family members participate in the production, including a blind son, whom we see hitching a ride to market with his sister to purchase the sheep skins and wood planks used in the instrument's manufacture. A doctor visits the father's younger 3-1/2 year-old son, who has also lost his eyesight, and off...
This simple but affecting documentary portrays a rural craftsman who makes a traditional Iranian percussion instrument called a daf. All able-bodied family members participate in the production, including a blind son, whom we see hitching a ride to market with his sister to purchase the sheep skins and wood planks used in the instrument's manufacture. A doctor visits the father's younger 3-1/2 year-old son, who has also lost his eyesight, and offers this advice: 'Pray to God. Give to charity. Have ceremonies and have a dervish play the daf for him.' The greater part of the film focuses on the laborious work involved in the fabrication of daf and culminates in a rousing ritual for the ailing boy. The accomplished camerawork takes advantage of the surrounding scenery and local color. Sensitive individuals are warned of a brief but graphic segment of sheep being slaughtered

Throughout the documentary we meet many of Maria’s students. Diana, who is diagnosed with polio, overcomes her own limits through dancing and reclaims her femininity. Marcos and Macarena, two teenagers with down syndrome, meet at Maria's studio and learn to express themselves in new ways. After years of developing and cultivating her teaching style which is based on the perception of inner rhythms and the symbiosis with music, Maria Fux is now dealing with one last student, possibly the most difficult one: herself. Lima on Sundays is alive with Huayno music, in which one hears authentic Inca melodies performed on every conceivable type of instrument. In the moody lyrics, the musings of oppressed people assume an existential and timeless quality even when a carnival atmosphere prevails. This is one of the few ethnographic films that deals with complex issues of cultural mixture. Rather than focusing on a single community or ethnic group, the film investigates a broad cultural region and illustrates what happens to it as it confronts the commercial traditions and demands of the West."Dancing with the Incas" will generate thought, analysis, and discussion in a wide array of courses in cultural anthropology, Latin American studies, ethnomusicology, popular culture, and the arts and humanities.
