"Hidden Apartheid: A Report on Caste Discrimination" provides an in-depth history and analysis of caste-based discrimination. Since the early 1900s, Indians have migrated across the world, seeking freedom from caste-based inequality, only to discover in the last few decades that the very practices they escaped have resurfaced in their new homelands. Caste discrimination outside India has been reported in community centers, places of worship, workplaces, educational and political institutions, restaurants, public transportation, and in matrimonial columns. This film illustrates how casteism originated in Indian society, and how caste segregation was systemic, until the Constitution of India made it unlawful. However, political democracy has not translated into social democracy; casteism and "untouchability" have remained, and are practiced in every country where Indians have settled. Filmed over 4 years, this human rights documentary uses interviews to uncover ongoing caste conflicts in the UK, the US, New Zealand, and Australia, and the current legal efforts to end these discriminatory practices once and for all. Caste discrimination is a human rights violation that receives very little attention by non-Indians, because the alternative stories of India's poor have been historically hidden. This film shines a spotlight on these injustices that need to be confronted urgently by the wider world.

A slave revolt in 1791 and a second war against colonial France led to Haiti becoming the first independent black republic in 1804. After suffering under tyrants for decades, most recently the infamous Duvalier (Papa Doc) and his son, the Haitians finally elected Jean Bertrand Aristide, a reformer. Haiti's troubles continued when the military overthrew Aristide, although he later returned. The film focuses on some of the victims of the more than 40,000 human rights violations that have taken place in this troubled country. Death and injuries occur after clashes between Aristide supporters and the military, between the "new" police , the old police, and criminals . United Nations human rights observers (MICIVIH) have been dispatched to Haiti to help establish a working democracy. It is a complex problem since the judiciary and the prison system operate under ancient laws dating back to the Napoleonic codes. The UN observers are instituting new methods such as town meetings, mediation training, and community policemen. They are working to help the Haitians learn to protect and promote human rights. Welcome culture was the focus of attention yesterday, now it's about integration and the question of how it can succeed.
The 95-minute documentary ALLES GUT tells of two children who come to Germany at the time with their families: Djaner, 7, from Macedonia and Ghofran, 11, from Syria. Their escape ends in Hamburg, in the middle-class district of Othmarschen. But how do they find each other in their new life?
Djaner ran away from poverty and discrimination with his brother Mahmud and his depressive mother. On his first day at a German elementary school, a dream comes true for the Roma boy. In his home school meant for him fear of beatings. In Hamburg Djaner wants to belong, as do hundreds of thousands of other refugee children who suddenly have to be schooled in Germany.
Ghofran initially hopes she can leave Germany soon. She listens to Arab hiphop and lives on in her thoughts in Syria, while her father Adel in Hamburg struggles to arrive forever. At school, where Ghofran learns German, she meets girls who are allowed to do everything. What does she want to accept, what is she willing to give up?
Award-winning author Pia Lenz ('Hudekamp - Ein Heimatfilm') accompanies Djaner and Ghofran for a year in their search for themselves and a new life for their powerful, very moving documentary ALLES GUT. The perspective of the children opens up a new, unadorned view of the integration of hundreds of thousands of refugees and the question: How do we give a home to those most in need of a future?

This extraordinary documentary is one of the most intelligent, perceptive, and engaging films ever made on African culture and art. It explores with irony and humor issues of authenticity, taste, and racial politics in the transnational trade in African art. Interweaving stories of Western collectors, Muslim traders, African artists and intellectuals, and the filmmakers themselves, the film focuses on a remarkable art dealer from Niger named Gabai Barre. It follows him all the way from the rural Ivory Coast to East Hampton, Long Island, where he bargains for a sale. The film shows how (through occasionally hilarious and frequently fantastic tales about the art objects) he adds economic value and changes the "meaning" of what he sells by interpreting and mediating between the cultural values of African producers and Western consumers. For Baare and the other African art traders, the animist "fetishes" they sell are simply commodities, bought and sold like any other. Or so they say. For Western collectors, the best, most "authentic" pieces are considered Art (with a capital A), and their economic value is purely coincidental. Or so they say. "In and Out of Africa" is a classic work that will richly repay viewing in a variety of courses in African studies, cultural anthropology, and art. It was produced by Ilisa Barbash and Lucien Taylor; it features Gabai Baare; and it is based on original research by Christopher Steiner.

This is the only American documentary film to examine the Rape of Nanjing, December 13, 1937, when the Japanese Imperial troops marched into this city in China. In just six weeks they murdered 300,000 civilians, and systematically raped and killed thousands of women. Today, the Japanese government continues to deny it ever happened. In the Name of the Emperor is a monument to the suffering of the Chinese at the hands of the Japanese during World War II. It weaves together rare footage of the Japanese occupation, diary entries from Americans who were there, and the eyewitness accounts of surviving Japanese soldiers. Especially unique is the newly discovered film footage of the massacre shot by John McGee, an American missionary who was living in Nanjing. This footage was part of the testimony at the war crimes trial, but has never been seen until now. The Nanjing Massacre was the impetus for the Japanese system of "comfort stations" or military brothels in occupied territories to stem the tide of venereal disease. Included is an interview with a Korean "comfort woman" who speaks openly about her sexual servitude. These war crimes continues to disrupt diplomatic relations between Japan, the Philippines, Korea and Taiwan to this day. The horrors captured in this ground-breaking documentary reminds us of the exploitation and suffering of women, and indeed all civilians during war time. One camp we see is in the middle of a forbidding desert, where the extremes of heat and cold intensified misery. Here, prisoners, uncertain of their future and visibly frightened, spoke to cameramen. Some admit they were politically active, while others say they were not engaged in political activity. Some are old; some are women. Young men are forced through "re-education".
