In January 1913 two men disillusioned with the worlds they live in, anonymously walked the streets of Vienna. Josef Stalin was a young revolutionary exiled from his Russian homeland: Adolf Hitler a penniless failing artist. Who could believe that these two misfits would soon decide the fate of the planet? How did these two men manipulate the political climate of their respective countries to reach absolute power? Why did they send millions of innocent people needlessly to their death? This psychological dual biography exposes the chilling parallels--and the glaring differences--of these two dictators. Among the similarities is that both loved their mothers but disliked their violent fathers, both had loved ones who committed suicide. Among the differences was that Stalin feared all his associates, while Hitler trusted his inner circle. The film features exceptional footage from film archives in Russia, Germany, Eastern Europe, Great Britain and the USA including rare footage of Stalin's mother and of his funeral. Among those interviewed are Stalin's niece, Kira Alliluyeva and Wolf Rudiger Hess, son of Hitler's deputy Rudolf Hess. This fascinating documentary provides new insight into these powerful and bloodthirsty men. High School Adult

In Vietnam, one of the last communist nations, Ho Chi Minh remains the father figure for the nation. For many in the West there remains a fascination with Uncle Ho, the frail, idealistic leader who against seemingly insurmountable odds humiliated two of the world's strongest armies, the American and the French. This film, based on newsreel footage and interviews with contemporaries, traces the story of his life. Born into a Mandarin family in 1890 when Indochina was part of the French empire, he gravitated towards Paris like many in his generation. There he founded the Indochinese Communist Party, calling for an independent Indochina composed of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The following years were spent between Russia and Asia where he learned guerrilla warfare from Mao Tse Tung. His big chance came during World War II when the Japanese occupied Indochina. The film goes on to show how his army, the Viet Minh, drove them out and then went on to fight the French for control of the country. Independence for North Vietnam was achieved with the defeat of the French at Dien Bien Phu. He never lived to see the victory over the Americans or the unification of Vietnam. Phyllis and Orlando Rodríguez's lives shatter when their son, Greg dies with thousands of others in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Instead of seeking revenge, the grieving parents begin a journey of reconciliation that transforms their lives. The film follows their odyssey, which thrusts them reluctantly into the public eye as they speak out against war in Iraq and Afghanistan, oppose the death penalty for 9/11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui, and befriend his mother. Seeking to understand the nature of violence, they engage in an emotional dialog with men incarcerated at Sing Sing prison for violent crimes, who themselves seek reconciliation. Over time Phyllis and Orlando reach a new understanding of their rebellious son, who had just begun to find his way when his life was cut short. The film mixes in-depth interviews with on-location footage and striking archival photographs and video to create a deeply personal story that invites us to re-consider conventional concepts of justice and healing.

The eyes of the world have been on Cuba as thousands of Cubans have risked their lives trying to reach the U.S. Inside Castro's Cuba looks at what drove many to leave and what the reality is for the vast majority of Cubans who stayed behind. With the collapse of the Soviet bloc, Cuba has been presented with its toughest test of strength since the revolution thirty-five years ago. Filming in Cuba for an entire year, the filmmaker gained rare access to Castro himself and to his personal archives. The result is an insightful view of the man and his people. People wonder how long Castro will maintain his leadership. The film discovers huge support for him because he brought Cubans a higher standard of living than that of any other country in the third world. Still vigorous and tenacious about his power, he is not likely to give up the revolution. High School College Adult

Why do so many Muslims hate the United States? What has America done to alienate so many people in the Muslim world? Imran Khan, a Pakistani celebrity cricket player turned politician, tries to answer these questions in this provocative documentary filmed in locations throughout Pakistan. He examines the political, social and economic causes of the schism between the Islamic world and the West. The film takes us to Islamabad's Women's College, where the students are mainly from privileged, middle class backgrounds. But even here, the underlying feeling is that the United States only cares or acts when its own people are at risk and that many American policies are determined on racial grounds against "black or brown people". In Peshawar, anti-war demonstrators believe that the war on Afghanistan following September 11th, was not justified because the West did not provide proof of the Taliban's culpability. In this part of the world, the spectre of the IMF looms large. Khan notes that as the services provided by the Pakistani government diminish under the pressure of its debts, the vacuum created has been filled by others. The poor turn to religious schools, often breeding grounds for a more intolerant version of Islam. Unsurprisingly, their influence is strongest where poverty is most pronounced. This fascinating and highly resonant report goes a long way towards explaining the problematic nature of the relationship between Islam and the West. It is a schism that developed long before the bombing of Afghanistan, and is likely to take even longer to heal. College Adult

J Street is a term for one of Washington D.C.’s newest lobbies, a lobby in support of an Israeli two-state solution. This upstart lobby, less than five years old, sees itself as a David to the immensely powerful lobby American Jewish pro-Israel lobby. This feature length documentary tracks the J Street lobby as it attempts to change what it means to be pro-Israel in America. We watch as they struggle to influence the Obama administration towards taking an active role in negotiating a two-state solution. J Street is shot with the intimacy of cinema verite, and we feel the pulse of this grass-roots organization as they attend high-level strategy meetings and spend long, intense nights working towards their goal. J Street pulls us into this group of passionate lobbyists and their fervent efforts to persuade those in power. This documentary is at once a compelling story about the American political process at work and about the desperate need for Israel to reach a lasting peace.
