INSIDE CUBA:---THE LAND THAT REFUGEES FLEE:
As Cuba enters the fifth year of Fidel Castro's rule, that island nation is a land of uncertainty and quiet desperation. These pictures of life in Cuba were made by an American cameraman on assignment from UNIVERSAL Newsreel and show only what authorities wanted to show. However, they do reflect the military flavor of day-to-day life and there's not much to show that Communism has bred prosperity for the masses in Cuba.
Then the freighter "Shirley Lykes" drops another shipment of supplies - ransom for Castro's war prisoners -- before picking up 1,170 refugees who will find a haven in the United States. They are mostly relatives of the war prisoners, who sacrificed all their possessions to Castro in order to leave their homeland.
WEATHER AROUND THE WORLD
As the United States suffers its fifth freeze of the winter, the thermometer flirts with zero as far south as Alabama......
In Europe there are five-foot drifts south of Florence, Italy. Suffering is widespread throughout the Continent.
In Japan the weather agency records 10 to 12 feet of snow in some sections -- the heaviest snow fall in its 77-year history.

JOHNSON STUDIES DeGAULLE SUGGESTION:
President Charles DeGaulle holds one of his rare press conferences in Paris and stages another attempt to have the voice of France heard on the international scene. He wants to call a five-nation summit conference to re-shape the United Nations.
This would involve Red China sitting down with France, Britain, the Soviet Union and the United States. An obvious impossibility according to U.S. observers.
In Washington, at his news conference, the President says he would have to study the proposal.
Meanwhile, Washington officialdom appears to be looking on the idea with jaundiced eye......
WAR HERO RETIRES:
President Johnson also takes time out to honor the man who built the Air Force to its present awesome power. GENERAL CURTIS E.LeMAY, retires. He is the last of World War II combat generals to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
General LeMay receives another cluster to represent his fourth Medal of Honor.
