MUKDEN, Manchuria -- The last detachment of relief soldiers to enter the fighting zone, leaves here with the cheers and farewells of the Japanese populace ringing in its ears. These are, happily, probably the last men who will go into the war area, because of the acceptance by the warring factions of the League of Nations peace plan this week. Grim and determined the well-trained regiments swing out of the city to take part in the last stages of what threatened to become another momentous conflict.

BAGNELL, Mo. -- Swollen rivers and flooded brooks emptying into the new great artificial "Lake of the Ozarks" tax it to capacity, resulting in the spillways being tested under emergency pressure. The 125-mile-long body of water, which buried Linn City when it was constructed, pushes against the powerful lock gates, and down over the valley pours the overflow. The project proves worthy under fire, and presents a picturesque and thrilling waterfall as the overflow rushes off, successful in its first difficult test.

BERKELEY, Cal. -- As a result of the terrific blast while firemen were extinguishing a small blaze at the home of Norman L. Saunders, three persons are dead and 68 injured because a leaking gas main filled the dwelling with fumes during the fire. Spectators gathered from the nearby University of California campus, women and children, filled the streets. Suddenly and without warning the explosion occurred, scattering ruin and debris for several blocks. Four investigations are under way to determine the cause of the tragic event.

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. -- Kidnaping Warden Thomas B. White and other officers, the desperadoes force their way from the Federal Prison, and using the captives as shields, terrorize the country with fire-arms, which were obtained in some unaccountable manner. A posse of 500 set out on the trail and rescue E. C. Salisbury, a farmer near here, imprisoned in his own home by the desperadoes, who sought refuge there. A stirring battle resulted in the retaking of 3 of the felons, the death of 3 others and the subsequent capture of the seventh.

Folks sit down, press a button, and presto -- without warning, salt and pepper and bread and butter appear on the table. And so it goes through a whole meal. Things pop right out of the bottom of the table, with a dispatch that would make Thurston wonder. And there's no magic to it, the designer claims.

Hoover Gives "Farewell" Speech
NEW YORK, N. Y. -- As a final official message to the American people before retiring from office March 4th, the President, speaking at the Lincoln Day Dinner of the National Republican Club, warns that economic recovery cannot be brought about in this country until Europe's ills also are remedied. He calls upon all nations to unite to prevent an economic World War -- the probable fore-runner of armed conflict -- and urges that some part of the foreign debt payments be set aside to help other countries back on a gold standard.
Pirates Stage Brilliant Pageant
TAMPA, Fla. -- Gasparilla, the Scourge of the Spanish Main, sails again, and with his cut-throat crew of 130 freebooters, descends upon the city and sacks it as of yore, in a colorful re-enaction of the famous sea-rover's attack in colonial times. Striking scenes of America's most spectacular festival.
Mussolini Honors Fascist Heroes
ROME, Italy -- 50,000 Black Shirt militiamen mass in the famous Piazza di Siena to be reviewed by Il Duce and to see several of their beloved leaders, including Gen Debono, Gen. Balbo and Deputy Devecchi, quadriumvirs and veterans of the "March on Rome," decorated by the Premier in a colorful ceremony.
Troops Mass For Drive
SHANHAIKWAN, China -- Impressive scenes of the movement of Japanese troops into the battle zone near the eastern end of the Great Wall, and intimate views of Generals Nishi and Suzuki surveying the results of the First Nippon push in this sector. Fearful of the impending resumption of modern warfare in its most terrifying aspect, Chinese civilian inhabitants flee with their children across the ice-bound rivers and scatter gypsy-like through the countryside.
Crowds Hail Hitler Victory
BERLIN, Germany -- Blood-shed is a daily occurrence as Nazis and Communists clash in street demonstrations and raids in various sections of the Republic. Pre-election fever mounts rapidly. The National Socialists, determined that their chief shall remain as Chancellor, hold monster rallies, parades and reviews, as the new cabinet plots its election strategy.
Firemen Battle $1,000,000 Blaze
CHICAGO, Ill. -- Amazing scenes of one of the most spectacular conflagrations in local history, which taxes the stamina of the firefighters and their apparatus, with the thermometer at 22 below zero. A costly grain elevator on Goose Island is completely destroyed while streams of water turn to ice as fast as they are played upon the burning structure. Scores of men from the engine companies suffer frozen hands, feet and faces.
Set World Bob-Sled Record
LAKE PLACID, N. Y. -- All previous speed marks are shattered in the A.A.U. championship coasting races on the Mt. Van Hoevenberg Olympic run, with Curtis Stevens and his Blue Bird four streaking down the ice-glazed course and around the breath-taking zig-zag curves to make the mile-and-a-half in 1 min. 47.86 seconds.

EXTRA! Killer Misses Roosevelt--Cermak Shot
MIAMI, Fla. -- Assassin fires five shots in attempt on life of the President-elect at conclusion of welcome ceremonies in sea-side park. Mayor Anton J. Cermak of Chicago critically wounded as bullets aimed at the next Chief Executive go wild, cutting a swath among by-standers. Two women are among those hit, one of whom is near death. Hectic scenes mark the infamous shooting, the arrest of Giuseppe Zangara, the anarchist mad-man, and the hurried efforts to succor the victims. Unscathed, the future President heads the first-aid and emergency measures in rushing his close friend and supporter, Cermak and the others to a near-by hospital. Zangara, quizzed by an iron ring, maintains his defiance and gloats over his deed.
Frigid Gales Force Fishermen Home
BOSTON, Mass. -- The New England fishing fleet catches the tail end of the blizzard and cold wave that has scourged the United States. The various ships have to put back to port because of the ice that rapidly forms on decks and riggings. Heroic efforts and superb seamanship bring the vessels safely in but it takes many long and bitter hours to chop the frozen spume from lines and superstructure.
Honor Burial For Hitler Riot Victims
BERLIN, Germany -- For the first time since the days of the Hohenzollerns, a pompous State funeral is held here, with the German Chancellor and high officials of the Reich and of the Nazi organization taking leading parts in the solemn procession behind caskets bearing a National Socialist storm troop leader and a State policeman killed during the torchlight parade in honor of the new regime. 20,000 Brown Shirts follow the cortege, as 100,000 spectators look on. One of the most impressive scenes of the year.
Suckers Catch Sharks Without Hook
BERMUDA -- Remarkable scenes of the remora or suck-fish being used to catch sharks by means of its peculiar "vacuum-cup" dorsal fin. The little "come-on" is let down into the water by a string tied to its tail. It attaches itself to bigger denizens of the deep and hangs on while both are pulled to the surface and landed by astute fisherman.
Navy Shows Power In War Game
HONOLULU, T. H. -- Inspiring scenes of Uncle Sam's great naval aircraft mother ship, the Lexington, now operating as the pride of the "Black" or "enemy" fleet in this winter's battle maneuvers. Fighting planes are seen zooming up from the broad deck of the queer war vessel to smother the harbor and coast defenses of the Island of Cahu.
Rare Dogs Win Blue Ribbons
OAKLAND, Cal. -- Highlights of the twenty-first annual Pacific Coast Kennel Club show, with the elite of dogdom carrying off final honors. Pekinese, wire-hair fox terriers, chows, English bulls, griffons and pointers of the finest breeds are among the canine royalty decorated with first prize badges.
Chinese Mobilize For Defense
SHANHAIKWAN, China -- Gen. Ho Chu Kuo's celebrated 9th Infantry Brigade, heroes of the recent struggle around this city, dig in just south of the Great Wall and prepare to sell their lives dearly to prevent Japanese invaders from over-running their native soil. Continuous skirmishes along the front, where the opposing armies are face to face, awaiting the impending Jehol drive, are rapidly assuming more vigor in this warfare that isn't a war. Gen. Ho proves he is no "dug-out commander" by frequent visits to the firing lines.
