In this eye-opening film, the award-winning African journalist Sorious Samura reveals how corruption has become normal and accepted in Africa -- it is one of the root causes of Africa's many problems. Sadly, most aid money given by the West never reaches those it is meant to help; it gets siphoned off by corrupt governments. This film provides a sober portrait of how modern Africa really works. Samura moves into one of the largest slums in Africa, Kibera in Kenya, to reveal the relentlessness of everyday corruption, where the poor have to bribe just to survive. Bribery is the modus operandi for obtaining basics such as hospital appointments, building their shacks, getting work and staying out of jail. Samura returns home to Sierra Leone to live with a friend and her 10 children. Here widespread corruption led to a brutal and bloody civil war that ended in 2002. The country had the chance to start again but Samura describes how a seven-year aid project, led by the British, has failed because of corruption and a lack of understanding from Western donors. In the slums there is no water or electricity and Sierra Leoneans still have the worst life expectancy on the planet. Even a 9-year old must bribe his teachers just to be taught. Samura claims that, in many parts of Africa, school is a place where children learn how to bribe and to use power and status to get what they want. College Adult

In Africa, where two-thirds of countries maintain laws against homosexuality, gay people face increasing persecution. Award-winning African correspondent Sorious Samura investigates the experience of being gay in Africa, and discovers staggering levels of prejudice and hate, driven by governments, religious organizations, and communities. Samura examines the impact extreme homophobia is having on gay people’s lives, tracking down the victims of a recent mob attack in Kenya, and speaking to gay men who have spent time in prison for their sexuality. He discovers an AIDS epidemic, where the disease is spreading at an alarming rate among gay men who are not being given vital sex education and health care. In Uganda, Samura finds Muslims and Christians working closely together to target homosexuality and visiting American pastors help spread anti-gay sentiment. The film shines light on an overlooked human rights abuse in Africa that requires the attention of the global community. Adult College

When the filmmaker's mother committed suicide two weeks before her eighteenth birthday, she felt tremendous guilt and shame about the suicide. It was years before she could say out loud "My mother killed herself." She lived her life as if nothing had happened. But when she tried to commit suicide herself, she realized something was very wrong. She had to start acknowledging the feelings that she had repressed for years. She found that when she spoke about her mother's death by suicide, people did not want to hear about it. Some, however, told her they had friends or co-workers who were survivors, but that they didn't know how to discuss the subject with them. Many survivors do not talk about the suicide with anyone, even years after the event. By not talking about it, survivors have not been able to go through the normal healing process. After A Suicide provides support and identification for the many survivors of suicide. It will enable counselors to understand the feelings of those left behind and help them deal with their loss.
