In this myth, the Yanomamo account for the creation of human beings and for their ferocity. The myth is told by the shaman Dedeheiwa. Long ago, when people "like us" lived in a village "over there," Moon lived there too, and ate the souls of children. The villagers became very angry, especially because when Moon descended to consume the ashes of children, hanging from the roof in gourds, he crunched and chanted as he gloated over his evil tricks. So the ancestor Suhirina, who was very beautiful and tall, shot the moon with a bamboo-tipped arrow, and Moon's blood spilled all over the earth. Human beings came from this blood: strong and fierce people from the center where the most blood spilled, and weaker people from the Moon's droplets. You are from true blood, Dedeheiwa tells Chagnon, because there are many of you; my own village is weak, as we are descended from the droplets. It is because of Moon's blood, explains the shaman, that men fight and kill each other.

This tape utilizes film footage from the extensive series of Napoleon Chagnon and Timothy Asch. It was made in conjunction with seventh grade geography teachers in Wayland, Massachusetts schools, to show land use in a South American rain forest. It depicts many of the daily activities of the Yanomamo Indians such as slash-and-burn gardening, body decorating, gathering firewood, bathing in the river and preparing for a feast. This program can be used with the Holt, Rinehart Databank Curriculum or tailored to individual teaching in content areas of geography, world cultures and anthropology. "The process of collaboration between classroom teachers and D.E.R. allowed us access to a vast collection on the Yanomamo. It was a pleasure to create a video meeting the needs of our students rather than modifying classes to correlate with an existing film." — Maureen Moran, John L. Daly, Geography Teachers, Wayland (MA) Public Schools

The film offers a quiet encounter with a collection of students as they reflect on God, America, terrorism, marriage, the Middle East, and more. Despite being founded and still managed by French-trained Jesuit priests, the students and faculty of this all-boys school are roughly 60% Muslim and 40% Christian. By virtue of lineage, moreover, these young men are expected to help lead the Middle East into a new and uncertain world - a fact that, along with the socioeconomic and religious complexion of the school, gives their views particular significance.

"Reach for the Moon," "Loop the Loop," and many more tricks in the familiar repertoir of yoyo virtosos were created by a group of professional demonstrators, mostly Filipino, hired by the Duncan Yoyo Company during the Depression. Nemo Concepcion was among the first such demonstrators, and the originator of many tricks. Filmmaker John Bishop describes his first encounter with a yoyo man: "I fell under the yoyo's spell on the first really hot day of Spring in the endless year of fifth grade. A yoyo demonstrator appeared unheralded at the corner of the playground. 'Spinner,' he announced as the yoyo flew from his hand to sleep at his feet. 'Around the world,' it whizzed through a 360 degree arc. 'Walk the Dog,' and the yoyo bounced along the sidewalk as he minced behind it like a man walking a miniature poodle. This shopworn man of foreign mien brought magic to that hot and tired playground." For Bishop the yoyo man "became a personal totem of an America just out of reach," of the experience of the Great Depression and World War Two. Twenty years later Bishop met Nemo Concepcion demonstrating the yoyo at the Smithsonian Institute Festival of American Folklife. This film was made when Nemo was 77, about his art, his tricks, his teaching, his reflections on his and the yoyo's Filipino origins, and his yoyo philosophy.

The documentary follows Yuri Vella, writer and social activist of the Forest Nenets living in West-Siberia. He left his home village ten years ago to lead the life of a reindeer herder in the taiga. The little unique world he created there was meant to offer protection from the alcoholism and unemployment that sadly poses a serious threat to the indigenous peoples of Siberia. To give his grandchildren proper education in their natural environment and teach them reindeer herding skills, he establishes an elementary school in his winter camp. Unfortunately, Yuri Vella's world is but an oasis of traditional lifestyle in one of the largest oil-producing regions of Russia.

This film is an account of women's life in the Dhrangadra, in northern India, the seat of power of the Jhala Rajputs from the 11th century A.D. until 1947. The film unfolds through songs, dances, and stories of several palace women, including the Maharani (wife of the Maharaja), who is the mother of one of the filmmakers. She and others reflect upon traditional women's roles, the strictness of their former seclusion, and the ideals of women's purity and inner strength.

Filmed over a span of 8 years, this film is based on dialogue between Zulay Saravino, an indigenous Otavaleña of Equador, and Mabel Prelorán, an Argentine anthropologist living in Los Angeles. The Otavalo Indians are industrious landowners and farmers who have also transitioned somewhat to a textile-based economy, selling handwoven garments to tourists at markets in Quito. The film shows the beautiful mountainous landscape of Zulay's home and the traditions of her people - their work, history, food, clothing and Catholic religious practices. The educated and business-savvy Zulay shares her opinions on tourism and photography and her anger over the stereotypes imposed on indigenous people in Equador. She tells Mabel stories passed down from her elders and reflects upon the trade-offs she's had to make in leaving her home to come to Los Angeles, where her desire to learn new skills is tempered by homesickness. The film becomes a universal document on transculturation and its implications for identity, education, economic advancement and emotional ties.
