In 1971, Ofelia Domínguez Navarro wrote _50 años de una vida_, a memoir of her life. It includes most of _De 6 a 6_, but it also stands alone as a memoir and a testimony of Cuban life and society throughout her lifetime. As Cuba was a leader in testimonial writing, Ofelia’s contribution fit in with the methods of historical and literary inquiry. Ofelia Domínguez Navarro (1896-1977) belonged to the feminist, nationalist, and communist revolutionary groups in Cuba between 1920 and 1977. She wrote a memoir of her four imprisonments during the dictatorships of President Gerardo Machado and President Carlos Mendieta. She was a teacher, lawyer, firebrand, journalist, and activist for women and the working class. She was also one of the initial members of the Cuban Communist Party and a close friend of Julio Antonio Mella, its founder. She founded her own women’s and worker’s rights parties: the Unión Laborista de Mujeres and the Unión Radical de Mujeres in 1930 and 1931, respectively. She participated in the three national congresses on women’s rights, 1923, 1925, and 1939. She served on Dictator and President Fulgencio Batista’s delegation to the United Nations, ultimately leading it in 1957 and 1958.

TITLE: Celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the First Women's Cooperative in Novi Sad. DESCRIPTION: This is an unsigned report about the 40-year celebration of a women’s organization in Novi Sad which in this document, as well as in other documents generated by the Serbian-speaking women’s movement in the Vojvodina, is regularly described as the first women’s cooperative in Novi Sad (Ujvidék), the Vojvodina. The Vojvodina belonged to the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia which enjoyed a considerable degree of autonomy within the Lands of the Crown of Saint Stephen, or Hungary, in the dual Monarchy (from 1867) of Austria-Hungary. Serbian was one of the dominant languages spoken in the Vojvodina. The text was published in Ženski svet. List dobrotvornih zadruga Srpkinja (Women’s World: Journal of the Charitable Cooperatives of Serbian Women). The journal was published between 1886 and 1914 in Novi Sad (Újvidék), the Vojvodina, by the Charitable Cooperative of Serbian Women from Novi Sad (Dobrotvorna zadruga Srpkinja Novosatkinja). The editor of the journal was Arkadije Varađanin, a man who was an active proponent of women’s rights and who was a teacher and director of the Serbian High School for Girls established in Novi Sad in 1874. The author of the text reports that the first women’s cooperative in Novi Sad had been established by a Serbian woman, Savka Subotić(1834-1918), but that it has become “a purely Hungarian institution” since, just like many other institutions which had been established by the Serbs but have ended up serving “foreign interests.” One of the messages of the text is an advice to “us Serbs” to never cooperate with the “foreign element,” because the Serbs in that case end up being invisible. The texts reports that during the celebration in 1907, Savka Subotić was elected an honorary president of the association – the association is not named here but referred to as “the first local women’s association” – in order to pay her respect.The author mentions that the spokesperson during the celebration did not mention that Subotić had been the one who had established the cooperative 40 years earlier, and complains that the documents about the establishment of the organization “had certainly been destroyed.” Finally, the author reports that on the occasion of the celebration Savka Subotić held a speech in German and was in the center of attention of “all our foreign-speaking fellow citizens” (most probably meaning here specifically Hungarians and Germans). This text outlines the proceedings of the International Feminist Congress held in Brussels, in the summer of 1897. The international group focused on five major themes: women’s civic rights; the nature of patriarchy; women’s economic rights; the status of the feminist movement; and women and public charity. In the discussion on women’s civic rights, a number of speakers addressed concerns brought forth by a new German civic code with attention also given to English and Russian women’s civic status. The second session, which investigated men’s social and biological roles, questioned the degree to which male privilege is socially constructed. In the discussion of women’s economic rights, many speakers linked the idea of economic independence with the goals of feminism––itself a topic elaborated upon in the Congress’s fourth session. The fifth and final session looked at women’s participation in charitable organizations, and hypothesized on how to make women’s public work in this arena more socially palatable.
