Title: The General Meeting of February 24, 1922. Description: Manuscript of a report presented by Elena Meissner, the leader of the Association for the Civil and Political Emancipation of Romanian Women (AECPFR), at the general meeting of the organization held in Iassy, on February 24, 1922. The report contains a short account of the activities undertaken by the organization since its establishment in 1917, account that, when used together with the other accounts contained in the reports from other years, completes the puzzle of the organizational history of ACEPFR. Apart from its importance in reconstructing the organized efforts that this organization invested in demanding full civil and political rights for women, the document offers important information on Elena Meissner’s approach to defining feminism for the members of the organization she led. . Information on AECPFR’s efforts to connect with the international women’s movement through affiliation to the International Woman Suffrage Alliance is also provided. Keywords: Feminism, politics, women’s emancipation, suffrage, education, international, Association

Title: The National Council of Romanian Women. Answers to the questionnaire of the Suffrage Section. Description: Answers to the questionnaire sent, in 1938, by the Suffrage Section of the International Council of Women to national councils. The answers validated by Alexandrina Cantacuzino, the leader of the organization, show preoccupation with the political regime of the time – the ban on political propaganda and censorship stopped any militancy for women’s political rights and there was a tendency towards the elimination women from their previous positions in public life, except in the fields of social assistance and education. Keywords: Alexandrina Cantacuzino, politics, suffrage, women’s emancipation

TITLE: Discussion: 10) The Work for Preparing and Understanding the Speech of Comrade Enver, September 12-October 18 (Selected Pages). DESCRIPTION: On February 6, 1967, the General Secretary of the Party of Labour of Albania (PLA), Enver Hoxha, delivered a speech on the need to improve women’s lives and to oppose religious practices in everyday life. The dictator’s speech and the subsequent implementation of the state social policy toward women’s emancipation were influenced by the Chinese Cultural Revolution of Mao Tse-tung and were aimed at strengthening the control of the State-Party over the lives of the country’s citizens. The government demolished many sacred sites and used the pretext of fighting religious prejudices to generate atheistic propaganda focused on the education of the new socialist man/woman on the class struggle and on the fight against old traditions and mentalities. In addition to Mao, another key influence was the Marxist-Leninist theory of the economic development of society, positing that all women needed to break out of their confinement at home to participate in the production process. For the New Socialist Woman, emancipation would mean waging war against traditional customs and beliefs and rejecting religion as a masculine hierarchic ideology and practice that stressed women’s inferiority in society. Immediately after Hoxha’s speech, the “revolutionarization” period began, which sought to change everyday life, education, and women’s status in Albania. This document is part of a set of selected government documents, reports and information during the years 1967-1973, regarding different issues on women in socialist Albania. It reviews some key points from speeches of Enver Hoxha, including traditional customs and women employment.
