This document is comprised of the proceedings of the International Congress on the Rights of Women and Women’s Social Roles as well as an extensive annex, which includes articles discussed or cited in conference sessions. The annex, like the conference itself, was divided into three major themes of discussion: economic, moral, and social questions confronting women; women’s access to educational opportunities; and women’s status in law and legislation. After an introduction and transcription of the conference’s opening speech, presented by Maria Pognon, an elaboration of the first theme occurs during the second and third days of the event. Divided into morning and evening sessions, the conference featured more free-flowing dialogue amongst participants than it did formal presentations. On the fourth day, contributors discussed various aspects to providing women with equal educational opportunities and the day was finished with a speech by the French feminist Marguerite Durand on women’s status in law and civil codes. The conference’s fifth and last day included morning and evening discussions on women’s political rights and the possibility of enacting laws which protect women’s rights in particular.

The congress, which was held in Tehran in November and December 1932, is outlined in detail in this document. The first pages examine the state of “eastern” feminism and introduce several conference participants, most notably the delegates from Egypt and Syria. Meeting minutes follow this brief introduction, which include names and affiliations of conference participants as well as a description of each session. Discussion focused on such topics as women’s social and economic equality with men, education, standards of morality and women’s right to public space, feminist readings of Koranic Law, and perceptions of Western women and Western feminism. At the end of the conference, women debated these topics in reference to adopting resolutions on Muslim women’s position in society.

This extensive text includes both the transcribed proceedings of the meeting of the Tenth International Congress of Women in Paris as well as formal essays included by conference participants. The conference itself met over a period of several days, with themes and topics dispersed throughout various days’ sessions, but the formal presentations appear thematically in the tome. The first topic explored is women’s roles in public and private charities, with two essays focusing respectively on women’s participation in private charities internationally in the ten years preceding the meeting and recent improvements made to workers’ housing. The theme of hygiene comprises the conference’s second major theme, with two formal presentations on women’s roles combating alcoholism and tuberculosis. Third is the topic of education and essay topics here explore character education, how different countries have used education to respond to contemporary anxieties, and how to protect youth from moral corruption found in magazines, plays, images, and public events. The fourth major theme is law and legislation, and authors in this domain questioned the legal rights of women vis-à-vis their husbands as well as the civic capacity of married women in various national contexts. Questions concerning women’s right to work comprised the fifth major theme; protective labor laws for women’s work and a discussion of a minimum wage for women supplemented this topic. The sixth topic addressed by the Congress was women’s suffrage, including discussions on married women’s nationality and women’s moral influence as voters. The conference’s major themes conclude with examinations of female university students, possibilities open for women desiring careers, and the role of women in pacifism and in international conflict resolution. The text ends with a transcript of the conference’s closing sessions, as well as adopted resolutions and a helpful index outlining the contributions of all participants.

This is a detailed report of the 1923 meeting of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance in Rome, written by French delegate Alice la Mazière. The document begins with an introduction to the question of feminism and women’s rights in Italy, which Alliance president Carrie Chapman Catt critiques as “inferior” to women’s status in other Western nations. Major meeting sessions included “The Civil and Political Status of Women,” and “Enfranchised Women,” in which the status of German and Czechoslovakian women was explored. Annie Furuhjelm of Finland presided over a discussion on creating exclusively feminist political parties in enfranchised nations and Carrie Chapman Catt spoke on the question of women’s liberation before passing the presidency on to Mrs. Corbett Ashby, a prominent British feminist.

The sociologist Clotilde Dissard offers a report and critical review of the 1896 International Feminist Congress, held in Paris. The author places conference discussion into six categories, including feminism, marriage and the family, women’s labor, prostitution, women’s rights to education, and women’s political rights. Writing from the French perspective, the author privileges the voices of French participants and then places their opinions and arguments in context with wider social and political beliefs on women’s rights. The author concludes that there were perhaps too many divergent opinions presented on the topic of feminism during the conference, making the conversation contradictory and “ridiculous” at times. A greater emphasis on women’s education, according to Dissard, would lead to a better perspective.

This is a transcript of a meeting of French feminists from various organizations, including Mrs. Cecile Brunschvicg, Mrs. Germaine Malaterre-Sellier, Mrs. Yvonne Pagniez, Ms. Bazy, Mrs. Bertha Lutz (of Brazil), and Mrs. Avril de Sainte-Croix. The meeting begins with Mrs. Brunschvicg’s detailed explanation of the recent Berlin Congress, an assembly sponsored by the International Woman Suffrage Alliance. She explains that since the group convened in Berlin, Germany, a nation which already accorded women the right to vote, participants focused more on women’s experience as voters rather than the issue of women’s suffrage itself. Brunschvicg provides a lengthy explanation of women’s rights in other countries, highlighting France’s particularity as a nation which had not yet recognized women’s equality. Mrs. Malaterre-Sellier follows with a discussion of pacifism, which she argues is difficult for French women to promote politically since they did not yet have the right to vote. Mrs. Pagniez and Ms. Bazy then separately explain the prospects of family suffrage in France, and Mrs. Lutz ends the meeting with a short explanation of women’s rights in Brazil.
