TITLE: F. Pokrócz to Rosika Schwimmer, Balmazújváros, 5 May 1908. DESCRIPTION: The letter gives information on the genesis of the connection between Róza Schwimmer of the Feminist Association (Feministák Egyesülete) and a group of politically active peasant women from Balmazújváros, today North-Eastern Hungary, including Mrs. István Bordás in particular. See also, Péter Veres, “A feministák [The Feminists],” in Falusi krónika [Village Chronicle], 2nd ed. (Budapest: Magyar Élet kiadása, 1944), 231–243 (14pp.); as well as the correspondence with Ferencz (Ferenc) Pokrócz (Pokróc), Mrs. Gábor Magyar, Mrs. István Bordás, Mrs. István Szabó, Rosika Schwimmer, and the Feministák Egyesülete [Feminist Association]. The letter is written by Ferencz (Ferenc) Pokrócz (Pokróc), who discusses a recent meeting with Schwimmer, who he addresses as “my beloved woman Comrade” (szeretet elvtársnőm, spelling in the original). Pokrócz in all likelihood was connected to the National Agriculture Party (Országos Földmívelő Párt), a left-wing peasant party founded in April 1908 in Balmazújváros. Pokrócz initially would have liked Schwimmer to give a “women’s lecture” on May 1, but now invites her to Balmazújváros for Ascension Day (28 May 1908). The letter mentions Pokrócz’ woman fellows in Balmazújváros and a related women’s appeal – possibly (to be) communicated by Pokrócz – and discusses the necessary formal registration of the event as well as the question of reimbursement of the travel costs. KEYWORDS: Women and Institutions of Empire; Hungarian government; Right of Assembly; Social Reform and Political Activism; Political Parties and Other Male Dominated Organizations; Political and Human Rights; Suffrage; Work and Class Identity; Gender and Class; Peasant Women of Balmazújváros; Róza Schwimmer (Rosika Schwimmer) Habsburg Empire; Hungary

The letter, written by Ferencz (Ferenc) Pokrócz (Pokróc), addresses Schwimmer as “Dear fellow woman-traveler (Kedves elv. Barátnőm).” It opens with a reference to Schwimmer’s letter, telling that Pokrócz has informed the “woman fellows,” who are more than happy that Schwimmer will come to Balmazújváros on Ascension Day. Pokrócz then discusses the problem that he or the inviters now cannot reimburse (fully or at this point) the travel costs in relation to the planned event with Róza Schwimmer in Balmazújváros. Pokrócz now signs “in the Name of the Women.” KEYWORDS: Social Reform and Political Activism; Political Parties and Other Male Dominated Organizations; Political and Human Rights; Work and Class Identity; Gender and Class; Peasant Women of Balmazújváros; Rosika Schwimmer; Habsburg Empire; Hungary

The document conveys the decision taken during a meeting held in the rooms of the Agriculturalist-Association of Balmazújváros (Balmazújvárosi Földmivelő-Egylet). Two women, Mrs. István Bordás and Mrs. Gábor Magyar, shall represent the organization of the women of Balmazújváros at a conference called by the Feminist Association. The document gives a detailed reasoning, referring, among other things, to militarism and universal suffrage, and a version of the formula used by the Feminist Association: “Only the form of suffrage which includes women too is universal!” The document also refers to a prospective decision to be taken by “all our woman sisters of the world.” [The Hungarian text gives the gender-neutral Hungarian term for sisters/brothers, adding “woman” for clarification.] KEYWORDS: Social Reform and Political Activism; Political Parties and Other Male Dominated Organizations; Political and Human Rights; Suffrage; Work and Class Identity; Gender and Class; Peasant Women of Balmazújváros; Mrs. István Bordás Sára Rokon Tóth; Habsburg Empire; Hungary

Two male associates from Balmazújvár had been to Budapest; yet, they had not had the time to see Róza Schwimmer. The women plan to go to Budapest themselves, too. The male fellows had traveled to Budapest in connection with international cooperation involving Germany. They plan to call a people’s assembly in Balmazújváros in connection with the struggle for equal suffrage, and the women of Balmazújváros ask the women of the Feminist Association for information and advice in this regard because they want to participate in the struggle. TITLE: Mrs. Gábor Magyar to Rosika Schwimmer, Balmazújváros, 3 June 1908. DESCRIPTION: The letter belongs to a group of letters, generated within the framework of the relationship between the Feminist Association (Feministák Egyesülete), Róza Schwimmer in particular, and a group of politically active peasant women from Balmazújváros, today North-Eastern Hungary. The letter was written soon after Rosika Schwimmer’s initial visit to Balmazújváros. It is one of the earliest letters written by the peasant women themselves. It extends “sisterly” greetings (using the Hungarian gender-neutral term “brotherly/sisterly”) to “Róza Svimmer” and her colleagues, addressing them as “fellows.” (This gives Schwimmer’s name phonetically correctly, if read according to the Hungarian spelling rules.) The signature reads “The Inspector of our Association Mrs. Gábor Magyar,” indicating that the peasant women had established (possibly informally) an organization. In the body of the letter the authors refer to their organization as “Free Women’s Organization” (Szabad Nőszervezet). See also, “Mrs. István Bordás to Feministák Egyesülete [Feminist Association], Balmazújváros, 1 December 1916” (Letter, Balmazújváros, December 1, 1916), P999 Feministák Egyesülete [Feminist Association], Box 3 Folder 5, Magyar Nemzeti Levéltár [National Archives of Hungary]. The authors write in detail about the sisterhood of all women and the love and connection between them in terms of both politics and religious references. TITLE: Mrs. István Bordás to Feministák Egyesülete [Feminist Association], Balmazújváros, 1 April 1910. DESCRIPTION: The letter belongs to a group of letters, which gives information on a group of politically active peasant women from Balmazújváros, today North-Eastern Hungary, and the relationship between them and the Feminist Association (Feministák Egyesülete). The letter opens with the salutation “Our dear woman-fellows (Kedves nötársnaink).” It expresses regret that no representative of the Feminist Association participated in an assembly organized by the women from Balmazújváros on May 1, and it gives a detailed account of the assembly, in which women and men from elsewhere, including from the town of Hajdúszoboszló some twenty kilometers away, participated as well. Mrs. Bordás in a very short speech convinced the men present at the assembly to support the demand for women’s suffrage, arguing that women are as useful members of society as men, and that women and men shall move forward “side by side.” It was agreed that the outside guests would continue to agitate as they traveled home, and the women from Balmazújváros would later on follow up on the results in the given places, and support the newly won followers. There was also another assembly in Balmazújváros on May 1 where the moderate agrarian-socialist social democratic leader Vilmos Mezőfi (Social Democratic 48-Party [48-as Szociáldemokrata Párt]) gave a speech, and Mrs. Bordás refers to the various interactions and further plans for the future. The note in different handwriting on the last page of the letter reads: “Shall I send an express receipt or will you yourself travel down there?” KEYWORDS: Social Reform and Political Activism; Political Parties and Other Male Dominated Organizations; Political and Human Rights; Suffrage; Work and Class Identity; Gender and Class; Peasant Women of Balmazújváros; Mrs. István Bordás Sára Rokon Tóth; Róza Schimmer (Rosika Schwimmer); Habsburg Empire; Hungary

TITLE: Mrs. István Bordás to Feministák Egyesülete [Feminist Association (in Hungary)], Balmazújváros, ca. 1909. DESCRIPTION: The letter belongs to a group of letters, which gives information on a group of politically active peasant women from Balmazújváros, today North-Eastern Hungary, and Mrs. István Bordás in particular, and the relationship between them and the Feminist Association (Feministák Egyesülete), and Róza Schwimmer in particular. The letter, which was written likely in 1909, opens with the salutation “My dear woman-fellows (Kedves nötársaim).” It refers to a letter the women of Balmazújváros had received in a language other than Hungarian. They could not read the letter and, therefore, had forwarded it to the Feminist Association. Since they cannot go (to London) because their “material situation” does not allow them to do so and since they cannot even send a letter there because they do not know the address, they kindly ask their fellows of the Feminist Association to take this letter on their behalf to London. The letter implies that the women of Balmazújváros had received an invitation from the International Woman Suffrage Alliance to participate in its fifth conference held in London from 26 April to 1 May 1909. This information was also publicized by the Feminist Association. The letter opens with the salutation “Dear woman-fellows (Kedves nötársak).” It reports on an assembly where the moderate agrarian-socialist social democratic leader Vilmos Mezőfi (Social Democratic 48-Party [48-as Szociáldemokrata Párt]) gave a speech. Underlining that the women of Balmazújváros have been there at the assembly, but they did not manage to speak there publicly, the letter relates that on the spot the group of women from Balmazújváros still formed a group with the women who were present. They gave a small speech to them, convincing them that and why women need suffrage. They also asked the women who were present to form an organization of their own, just as they themselves had done, gave advice with regard to further action and agitation, and promised that they would support the women in any possible manner.
