This extensive text includes both the transcribed proceedings of the meeting of the Tenth International Congress of Women in Paris as well as formal essays included by conference participants. The conference itself met over a period of several days, with themes and topics dispersed throughout various days’ sessions, but the formal presentations appear thematically in the tome. The first topic explored is women’s roles in public and private charities, with two essays focusing respectively on women’s participation in private charities internationally in the ten years preceding the meeting and recent improvements made to workers’ housing. The theme of hygiene comprises the conference’s second major theme, with two formal presentations on women’s roles combating alcoholism and tuberculosis. Third is the topic of education and essay topics here explore character education, how different countries have used education to respond to contemporary anxieties, and how to protect youth from moral corruption found in magazines, plays, images, and public events. The fourth major theme is law and legislation, and authors in this domain questioned the legal rights of women vis-à-vis their husbands as well as the civic capacity of married women in various national contexts. Questions concerning women’s right to work comprised the fifth major theme; protective labor laws for women’s work and a discussion of a minimum wage for women supplemented this topic. The sixth topic addressed by the Congress was women’s suffrage, including discussions on married women’s nationality and women’s moral influence as voters. The conference’s major themes conclude with examinations of female university students, possibilities open for women desiring careers, and the role of women in pacifism and in international conflict resolution. The text ends with a transcript of the conference’s closing sessions, as well as adopted resolutions and a helpful index outlining the contributions of all participants.

This volume consists of two speeches delivered by German feminist Lily Braun (Lily Braun-Gizycki) at the time of the International Women’s Congress in Berlin in 1896. In her address to the International Congress for Women’s Work (Internationalen Kongress für Frauenwerke und Frauenbestrebungen), Braun discussed the differences between the bourgeois women’s movement and the Socialist women’s movement. She noted that working-class representatives were invited to the Berlin congress but declined to participate. Working-class women saw women’s rights as part of larger social issues addressed by the Social Democrats in parliament. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) and its 48 representatives stood for all women, according to Braun, and she encouraged the audience to attend two large Socialist public meetings where she, Clara Zetkin, Emma Ihrer, Martha Rohrlack, Marie (?) Griefenberg, and Ottilie Baader were scheduled to speak about German women workers’ rights. The second speech is Braun’s address to a Socialist public meeting (Volksversammlung) in the Martens Ballroom. Here Braun argued for cooperation between the Socialist and bourgeois women’s movements. Citing examples from social and labor movements in England and Germany, Braun addressed the prejudices and misunderstandings between the bourgeois and socialist women’s movements. She described the efforts of Social Democrats to address the problems of working-class families in detail, including long workdays, the lack of maternity benefits and poor nutrition, as a counterargument to bourgeois claims that Social Democrats aimed to destroy the family. In addition, she refuted bourgeois fears that Social Democrats would destroy religion. Braun asserted that the SPD was the only party that advocated equal rights through direct universal suffrage.

This digital archive includes all items available at the Institute of Political History (Politikatörténeti Intézet) in Budapest for the period from foundation of the journal in 1905 to 1908. The journal was published with interruptions. After 1908, it was revived at the end of 1912, only with substantial financial backing and more control by the Social-Democratic Party of Hungary (Magyarországi Szociáldemokrata Párt). The voluminous stock of the journal as published in this later period, including World War I, is available at the Institute of Political History. Nőmunkás (The Woman Worker) gave information on the activism of organized social democratic women in Hungary. It regularly reports about the activities of the Association of Woman Workers in Hungary (Magyarországi Munkásnők Országos Egyesülete) and, later, on the National Organizational Committee of the Woman Workers of Hungary (Magyarországi nőmunkások országos szervezőbizottsága). The journal gave information about the national conferences of social democratic women. Nőmunkás called women to socialist activism, reported on the activities of the woman Comrades in Austria (Cisleithania), regularly gave information on social democracy and social democratic women internationally, commented on political developments and repression in Hungary and elsewhere, and discussed these events as well as social and political questions more generally, with reference to the questions of class and gender. The journal constitutes a key source of information on the social democratic women’s movement in Hungary and its international context.
