DESCRIPTION: Typescript kept in the papers of Mrs. Oszkár Szirmai (born Irma Reinitz, 1867-1958), leader of the child protection division of the Feminist Association (Feministák Egyesülete), the leading liberal-progressive women’s organization in Hungary at the time. The “Demand!” in all likelihood is authored by Mrs. Szirmai. It addresses “our brothers and sisters” with the request to contribute to the wartime effort of the Association by ordering and paying for goods that can be produced by “your poor sisters” in doing homework. This effort fulfills a double purpose: It generates “well paid” work for poor women, if only “in small doses so as to be able to include everybody,” while, later on, those who have ordered and paid for the work shall “give” what has been produced “as a present to those in need.” The “Demand” mentions winter cloth and simple cloth for women, children and babies as examples. The association had received a number of large orders, for instance for children’s clothes or wristlets, yet it was in dire need for new orders since “in the hours when work distribution takes place,” in the rooms of the school in Nagydiófa Street 8 in Budapest, “the clientele is as large as if warm cakes of new bank notes were distributed, whereas in reality it is only work which is distributed there.” The Demand mentions that the activities of the association have always been oriented towards social rather than charitable work, referring to the association’s counseling activities with regard to work and employment. Yet, the war has generated such manifold miseries that help now must be given “quickly and in reliable manner by action rather than through the word” alone. Maria Baiulescu (1860-1941) was an author, Romanian nationalist and civic organizer. She was the president of the Reunion of Romanian Women in Brasov/Brasso/Kronstadt (1908-1935), the President of the Union of Romanian Women (a federation of Transylvanian women’s associations) (1913-1935), and leader of ASTRA association’s Biopolitical Section, founded in 1927. A supporter of women’s social involvement, she advocated what has been termed “republican motherhood,” which focused on women’s roles as nurturers and educators of the nation. Baiulescu’s personal archives are housed by the "George Baritiu" County Library Brasov (Romania), Special Collections Unit. The Union of Romanian Women reunited approximatively half of the 60 independent Romanian women’s “Reunions” that had appeared in Transylvania since the 1850s. ¶ The speech laid out the purpose of a Union with “centralized power” to direct the activities of the adhering women’s Reunions in Hungary. The document also argued that the Union would direct the activities of women’s Reunions that would form in the future. The goals of the Union outlined by Baiulescu were promoting girls’ education, preserving peasant women’s handicraft traditions, raising “hardworking and thrifty wives and mothers,” promoting charitability among women, and creating a unified orphanage. Finally, according to Baiulescu, “through her disinterested social work woman is becoming an important factor even in states’ lives as only she is capable to resolve somewhat the humanitarian problem.” At first sight, the speech reaffirms and unifies the existing areas of activity of the Union’s members and places them within the politically uncontroversial frame of “republican motherhood.” However, concerning the context of this speech, the Romanian Women’s Union founding congress was scheduled to coincide with the International Woman Suffrage Alliance (IWSA) Congress in Budapest (3-5 June 1913). Whereas Saxon and Hungarian women’s associations in Transylvania were visible participants at the IWSA Congress, the newly-formed Union abstained from organized participation. The abstention was due to a “silenced or veiled” (but, nevertheless, present) suffrage politics pursued by the Transylvanian Romanian women’s movement in Hungary, one that may have been carried aut through the Romanian National Party’s advocating universal suffrage in the Hungarian Parliament, largely because of governemntal restrictions against minorities associational life in the Kingdom of Hungary ¶ This document points to the existence of the Union of Romanian Women in Hungary and the tendencies towards centralization of disparate women’s associations, occurring by the 1910s. Secondly, Baiulescu’s speech reveals the rhetoric that masked the transnational connections and internationally convergent politics some politically-minded Transylvanian Romanian women, although, perhaps, not Maria Baiulescu herself, were pursuing at the time. This digital archive includes all items available at the Institute of Political History (Politikatörténeti Intézet) in Budapest for the period from foundation of the journal in 1905 to 1908. The journal was published with interruptions. After 1908, it was revived at the end of 1912, only with substantial financial backing and more control by the Social-Democratic Party of Hungary (Magyarországi Szociáldemokrata Párt). The voluminous stock of the journal as published in this later period, including World War I, is available at the Institute of Political History. Nőmunkás (The Woman Worker) gave information on the activism of organized social democratic women in Hungary. It regularly reports about the activities of the Association of Woman Workers in Hungary (Magyarországi Munkásnők Országos Egyesülete) and, later, on the National Organizational Committee of the Woman Workers of Hungary (Magyarországi nőmunkások országos szervezőbizottsága). The journal gave information about the national conferences of social democratic women. Nőmunkás called women to socialist activism, reported on the activities of the woman Comrades in Austria (Cisleithania), regularly gave information on social democracy and social democratic women internationally, commented on political developments and repression in Hungary and elsewhere, and discussed these events as well as social and political questions more generally, with reference to the questions of class and gender. The journal constitutes a key source of information on the social democratic women’s movement in Hungary and its international context.
