Title: The General Meeting of the Association for the Year 1936. Description: Manuscript of report of the activity of the Association for the Civil and Political Emancipation of Romanian Women (AECPFR) for the year 1936, presented by Elena Meissner, the leader of the organization, at the AECPFR Congress from March 29, 1937. Canatcuzino’s orientation towards the doctrine of corporatism came in line with her constant preoccupation with the idea of attainment of social solidarity through the spiritual reformation and education of individuals in the spirit of sacrifice and communitarian values. In Cantacuzino’s particular reading of the corporatist ideology, the corporatist organization of the state had the advantage of offering the intelligentsia more possibilities to become involved in the political decision-making through a higher representation in the Senate. The corporate state could also give educated strata (of women) the opportunity to become more involved with better and more efficiently organized social and educational activities for the masses. This was considered important not only for the advance of women’s rights but also for the achievement of a better society. Description: Speech delivered by Alexandrina Cantacuzino, leader of the Romanian Women’s Association, at the meeting of the organization held in Bucharest, at the Lidertafel Hall on June 18, 1932. In this speech, Canatcuzino claimed women’s political rights using a discourse in which the achievement of female suffrage was connected to women’s character and functions in society and their contribution to the revival of the national spirit endangered by “politicianism”: “On these bases and acknowledging the gravity of the situation we demand political rights [emphasized in original], to serve as humble soldiers of the truth and justice this country, built and preserved in its ethnic and moral integrity by Romanian mothers. Therefore, granting women political rights [emphasized in original] is an imperious act of forestalling, not only because women are constantly demanding it, not because the justice imposes it, but because is a collective necessity for strengthening the country in all respects and for [working at] the welfare of the country.” The speech touches also on other topics such as demands for a decrease in public expenditure, the reorganization of state structures and support for agriculture to fight the economic and financial crisis. But in this speech, Cantacuzino declared that she was informed “by an important politician” that women had no chances to obtain full political rights. They could be offered only the right to vote for the Parliament.
