La Citoyenne was a French feminist newspaper, founded, funded, and edited by Hubertine Auclert, with the primary aim of promoting women’s suffrage. Auclert, the leader of France’s fledgling suffrage movement from 1880 to her death in 1914, lived in Algeria from 1888-1892. This experience intensified and shaped her already existing interest in the colony. La Citoyenne, published from 1881-1891, was the first French feminist newspaper to address questions of empire. In this issue, Auclert counters the argument against women’s voting on grounds that unlike most (though not all) men, they did not serve their country in military duties. She points out that more women give their lives paying the “maternity tax” than men the “blood tax,” though they would happily serve as soldiers if that assured them civic rights. Other articles deal with women’s work in the garment industry. Abstract created by Marilyn J. Boxer.

TITLE: Equality before the Law for Women too: The Entire Law Proposal of Mr. Mpasias. DESCRIPTION: In 1920, Thanos Mpasias-Typaldos, a member of the Greek Parliament, submitted a proposal for women's and men's equality before the law. His proposal consisted of two articles: Article 1: The provisions of all laws in force in Greece are applied equally to men and women. Article 2: The application of this law will be regulated by a particular decree. The argumentation supporting his proposal was based on the principles of Christianity as well as on the concepts of universal, natural rights. He argued that women, who were kept illiterate, were easier for men to control, and he used the example of the "hetaeras," the ancient Greek courtesans, to demonstrate his point. Feminism, he contended, would bring harmony to families. Women would gain individuality and freedom, working equally as men did. Finally, he pointed out that women had won the right to vote in many other Western countries, and Greece should not be left behind on this issue. See also, the response by Pavlos Nirvanas: "Psifos stis gynaikes [Vote for Women]" in O Noumas 17, no. 665, January 4, 1920: 12 [Available in Women and Social Movements in Modern Empires]. TITLE: Feminism, 1930. DESCRIPTION: Kleareti Dipla-Malamou, a poet and writer, used this article to respond to a male columnist of the same newspaper, Efimeris ton Ellinidon [Greek Women's Newspaper]. The male columnist had argued that the demand for women’s vote was untimely and that issues like education and illiteracy among women should take precedence over suffrage rights. Dipla-Malamou countered that the right to vote for women was necessary. According to her, men in the Greek state had a hundred years to provide women with full education rights, yet had failed to do so. She asked: How long must women wait for men's decisions to promote women's education? Instead, the right to vote would give women power to enact education rights, to pursue employment rights and equal pay, and to redress centuries of injustice against their gender. Dipla-Malamou contended that all of these suffrage benefits would improve their roles as wives and mothers.
