TITLE: Two Heroes, Part I. DESCRIPTION: After 1930, the content of the journal Yangi Yo'l [New Path], like that of most publications in the Soviet Union, became heavily ideological and oriented almost exclusively toward supporting the foremost issue in the Communist Party's agenda. Contributors to Yangi Yo'l came to include more men, and the work that they published was far less feminist than the content published in the 1920s. Of note, the digital archive includes full issues of Yangi Yo'l from 1925-1929. This poem is one of several examples of Yangi Yo'l poems published between 1930 and 1933. The themes in these poems were similar to many found in earlier issues: poets decry the former "slavery" of women and celebrate their liberation in Communist Uzbekistan; they denounce the veil (paranji) and cheer women who work in factories and on kolkhozes (collective farms); they hail women as heroines who defy oppressors. However, these poets exemplified new Soviet literary values of the 1930s, depicting work itself and labor production as central to life. Each poem was selected by scholar Claire Roosien. Each Uzbek-language original is accompanied by Roosien’s commentary, transcription in the Latin alphabet, and a beautiful, literary translation.
