TITLE: The Women’s Movement and the Peace, ca. 1919. DESCRIPTION: Manuscript kept in the papers of Mrs. Oszkár Szirmai (born Irma Reinitz, 1867-1958), long-term leader of the child and motherhood protection division of the Feminist Association (Feministák Egyesülete) and later its President, at the time the leading liberal-progressive women’s organization in Hungary. The manuscript likely was written by Mrs. Szirmai shortly after World War I. The text refers to some of the long-term history of women’s engagement for peace. It then gives an account of the International Congress of Women, The Hague, 1915, as an exemplary endeavor of how women have worked for peace, mentioning the peoples’ right to self-determination. When women’s equal political rights are granted, then the “right to motherly feeling will become the shield of humanity.” KEYWORDS: Women and Institutions of Empire; World War I; Women’s Anti-War Activism; National Self-Determination; Gender Difference and Peace; Political and Human Rights; Suffrage; Equal Rights for Women; Maternalist Feminism; Habsburg Empire; Hungary

TITLE: The Women's World Alliance: Famous Women in Budapest. DESCRIPTION: Article giving a detailed account on famous or interesting women, from Europe, Australia, America and India, who traveled to Budapest on the occasion of the seventh congress of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance IWSA in 1913, giving names and photographs, including reference to and a picture of Dr. Krajevszka (“Physician, organizer of the Bosnian Mahommedan women,” and state-employed doctor in the occupied province so that there shall be “a woman doctor for the harem ladies,”). The article opens with the claim that “never” before as many “interesting foreigners” had come together in Budapest. There are rich and gentile women among the guests, and thus the event is important even for those who don’t care for women’s suffrage otherwise. Carrie Chapman Catt’s world tour “to organize the women’s movement” is also mentioned. TITLE: The Force of Fate in the Advertisement Section. DESCRIPTION: Typescript kept in the papers of Mrs. Oszkár Szirmai (born Irma Reinitz, 1867-1958), leader of the child protection division of the Feminist Association (Feministák Egyesülete), the leading liberal-progressive women’s organization in Hungary at the time. The typescript was written likely by Mrs. Szirmai. The text relates that the child and motherhood protection division of the feminist association has submitted a petition to the office (Kabinettskanzlei) of His Majesty (Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary Francis Joseph), and in parallel to the responsible ministry, demanding that the King make use of his right of royal mercy to legitimize all children whose fathers – before the war wedding could have taken place –died the hero’s death as soldiers in the Austrian-Hungarian army, or are lost without trace so that they cannot give voice to their intention. The demand is in tune, the text argues, with the fact that war time relief measures have not differentiated between children born in or out of wedlock, and if granted it will not generate additional cost since the state-led child protection system doesn’t differentiate between these two groups of children anyway.
