Three interrelated themes dominate Muriel Wright’s correspondence in her papers at the Oklahoma Historical Society: her family ties, especially her father’s Choctaw lineage; her work in and promotion of Indian history, especially the Five Civilized Tribes; and her participation in Indian affairs, especially those of the Choctaw Nation. The long-term interaction among those themes was mutually reinforcing. Her commitment to the Wright family...
Three interrelated themes dominate Muriel Wright’s correspondence in her papers at the Oklahoma Historical Society: her family ties, especially her father’s Choctaw lineage; her work in and promotion of Indian history, especially the Five Civilized Tribes; and her participation in Indian affairs, especially those of the Choctaw Nation. The long-term interaction among those themes was mutually reinforcing. Her commitment to the Wright family’s Choctaw lineage sustained her commitment to the history of Indian people and to Indian affairs in Oklahoma, while her work as a historian and her involvement in Indian affairs invigorated her family ties. Title: Catalogue for the Exhibition of Austrian Women's Work: World Exhibition 1873 in Vienna. Description: The document is a catalogue published on the occasion of the Vienna World Exhibition of 1873. The catalogue gives an introduction on women's work and is followed by a list of producers and goods, which were crafted by women. One pavilion of the Vienna World Exhibition was devoted exclusively to women's work in the Habsburg Monarchy. The exponents were presented in four categories: schools, dilettantes, house industry, factory industry. In advance of the exhibition, commissions in Vienna, Ragusa, Graz, Görtz, Innsbruck, Bolzano, Brno, Olomouc, Opava (Troppau), Krakow, Chernivtsi, Trieste, Ljubljana collected 3,216 “female,” hand-craft products and industrial manufacturing products. A selection of this collection was presented in the pavilion devoted to women's work. As mentioned by Aglaia von Enderes in the introduction, the exhibition of women's art and craft served the purpose to visualise and raise attention on the work of women. The author of catalogue, Aglaia von Enderes (1834–1883) was a writer and active in the Wiener Frauen-Erwerb-Verein [Viennese Women's Acquisition Association]. She wrote several articles in the journal Politische Frauen-Zeitung [Political Women Journal] about the Viennese Women's Acquisition Association. The video, “A Century of Coast Salish History,” is a digital complement to the published book, Rights Remembered: A Salish Grandmother Speaks on American Indian History and the Future (University of Nebraska Press, 2016). Material in the video alternates between an interview with Pauline Hillaire, videographed in 2003, and an audio interview, recorded in 2011. The 2011 audio interview forms the soundtrack of an oral history narration accompanied by images of life at Lummi over the course of a century, beginning in 1911. The images were selected from Hillaire’s personal archives and from several institutional archives. They offer a glimpse into the changes –and the continuity– of life on the Lummi Reservation throughout the twentieth century. Hillaire opens the video singing “Red Cedar Tree Song,” and she discusses her family life.
