TITLE: Things Women Should Know: Women in Present Day, Felicia’s first letter to Julia, Part I. DESCRIPTION: Written by Maria del Pilar Sinues, this letter is part of a series titled “Ang Mga Bababe sa Karon nga mga Adlaw: Sulat ni Felicia kay Julia [Women in Present Day: Felicia’s Letters to Julia].” Translated into Ilonggo by the Makinaugalingon newspaper, these letters were featured in this newspaper for a year, from November 1923 to November 1924. Consisting of eighteen letters between Julia, a young orphan, and her surrogate mother Felicia, this series covers a variety of subjects from the choice of a marriage partner to the ways of dealing with one’s servants. In this featured letter, Felicia advises Julia not to engage in idle talk and refrain from boasting about herself: Be humble and tactful so you will not offend and hurt the feelings of others. Do not discuss your wealth in front of those who are impoverished; do not talk about your good health with those who are sick. Telling jokes and talking nonsensically and in a long-winded way are all inappropriate conduct for women. Do not interrupt those who are talking, and try to speak in a well-modulated voice. Be gentle and obedient, and careful with what you say. Forgive those who have wronged you and others will love you for that. KEYWORDS: Maria del Pilar Sinues, womanhood, social interaction, women
