TITLE: Unwillingness, 1932. DESCRIPTION: Spyros Melas (1882-1966), journalist, editor and playwright, used this article to lampoon feminists' claim for suffrage. He stated that less than 2,000 women came to vote in the 1932 municipal elections in Athens, despite receiving the right to vote in municipal elections after years of feminist struggles for suffrage. He offered in jest that if "a hat or any other accessory was given to women together with their voting card, then many more women would come to collect their cards." He continued his criticism of women by stating that though women feminists talked about their rights, the only rights women were interested in were shopping, spending excessive time in the shops, trying on dresses for hours, and nagging constantly. Melas argued that it was completely pointless for women to ask for the vote because little could be changed in political life by voting, and their husbands demonstrated this point. Finally, he concluded that feminism did not constitute progress.
