A page of legal paper contains a brief, hand-written manuscript on the role of myths in explaining and sanctioning traditional customs. It notes the myth, common among Southwestern American Indian tribes, of a girl who becomes pregnant. She abandons her baby, who is found and raised by antelope or deer, and who eventually returns to her people with the animal's magic. Benedict imagines a native storyteller concluding, 'And that is why unmarried girls always try to conceal it if they become pregnant.' Benedict notes asking local girls about this story, who exclaim, 'Do you know this girl, too?' as if she were a real person.

Thirteen pages, mostly lined legal paper, contain hand-written notes and other material apparently related to an analysis of ethics in Shakespeare's 'Hamlet.' The first page contains a partial quote from the play: [There is nothing either good or bad] 'But thinking makes it so.' Several pages contain a partial manuscript of the Hamlet analysis; some have one or two lines of related notes and two pages are blank. Number references, generally in the 500s, seem not to be to lines in the play, but may refer to pages in an unspecified work. One page, the third, is a library call slip for 'Die Anthropophagie' (Cannibalism) by German geographer and ethnologist Richard Andree.

Four pages of notebook paper, turned sideways, contain a hand-written, barely legible essay having to do with Shakespeare's play 'Hamlet,' which Benedict has explored before in writing about cultural relativity. She discusses 'passion' relative to the characters Hamlet and Ophelia, and describes Hamlet as a 'conscious rebel' who 'calls himself names to force himself along a course that is empty of meaning to him ...' The fourth page contains several brief quotes from the play, most by Hamlet himself. Given the orientation of the pages, the essay is written crosswise to the lines on the paper.
