Women gained the right to vote and run for election in 1989 in Jordan. Faisal ran for a seat in Parliament twice, finally winning in 1993. At the time, she was the first and only woman in Parliament. She walks a thin line: Those who oppose her and give her a difficult time are simultaneously trying to broadcast an image to the rest of the world as a country that gives equal rights to men and women.
