When questioned about his overall substance use, Dan admits that he’s primarily reliant on cannabis. Dan has tried ecstasy a few times, but claims it wasn’t a good experience and uses only prescription drugs due to his soccer injury. Dan did take a few extras of the prescription until they ran out, but didn’t refill it. In the past, Dan occasionally took Ritalin but didn’t like how it made him feel. With his alcohol consumption, Dan claims he only has a drink or two every now and then. As for cannabis, Dan smokes at least once a day, both with people and alone. Marijuana allows Dan to "mellow out", whether it’s before school, before practice or after school. Because of his long and persistent use, Dan describes having a high tolerance. When Dan doesn’t smoke, he admits that he feels anxious, insecure, restless, and his heart feels as if it will pound through his chest.

From the nurse, we learn that Dan has recently been expelled from school because of his smoking pot, which is the reason for this discussion. Dan is embarrassed that he’s here and feels that his school unfairly targeted him for expulsion because of his bad grades. When pressed by the nurse about any underlying issues, Dan confirms with a "maybe" that something larger is potentially going on in his life.

Dan, teen, currently exhibits signs of moderate cannabis intoxication. Dan tells the nurse that he sometimes drives under the influence of marijuana, and it’s apparent that he’s under the influence with his blood shot eyes and a slur to his words. Dan describes a pattern of cannabis use, often vaping to "level out", or taking a hit from a bong or edibles, and has been doing so since he was thirteen, almost every day. Dan was recently expelled from school, he says primarily because of his grades, but he was also caught selling pot. Dan has held previous jobs but was fired so he now "delivers" pot for a dispensary in exchange for marijuana. Dan insists that he uses pot primarily for anxiety and that when he’s not using he feels stressed out with school, his mom’s expectation, and generally with everything. When Dan is stressed, he can’t sleep. Dan’s mother has become concerned that Dan has been using more pot ever since the family tragedy where Dan’s father committed suicide. Dan admits that he is depressed and using marijuana helps him cope with his loss and get through the day. In addition, Dan is fearful that he may be having visions like his father had, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Before she started smoking marijuana, Jenny describes always jumping from activity to activity, which led her to not have time even to stop and feel stressed. Jenny discusses that her marijuana use started as a fun recreational activity and over time became a more regular habit as the pot alleviated her stress. Jenny has significant feelings of stress, with her thoughts constantly swirling, which the pot helps to calm. When Jenny experiences stress, she describes feelings of panic and being unable to breathe; her heart starts racing, her vision blurs, and she can’t immediately calm herself down. Eventually, she does calm down, but the stressful episode can last for hours. Socially, Jenny has multiple friends she feels she can talk to about her problems. Her friend Riley, she points out, also smokes pot to deal with stress. Upon further reflection, Jenny recognizes that she is spending more time alone, doesn’t hang out with her family as much, but feels this is so that she can be at peace and be herself. Even though Jenny understands that her decline in motivation can be connected to her marijuana use, the relief from stress outweighs the side effects. While Jenny is open to learning new techniques to deal with her stress and would love to reestablish her relationship with her mother, Jenny is reluctant to decrease her pot use because it helps provide near instantaneously relief for her stress.

As for alcohol, Jenny drinks minimally at parties because it just makes her sick.

Jenny, 16, appears calm, if not slightly annoyed that she is here for this interview. Jenny’s mom is upset because she caught her smoking marijuana with her friends and subsequently kicked Jenny’s friends out of the house. Though Jenny’s grades are fine, her mom thinks she doesn’t care anymore because she quit the Academic Elite club, stopped being a cheerleader, and left band where she played the flute. Jenny defends her decisions to leave those activities, admitting that she used to be driven but it was too much pressure and she’s lightened the workload to avoid burning out. Jenny has smoked cannabis once or twice a week for the last year and drinks alcohol occasionally and only at parties. Jenny uses cannabis primarily for the social aspect of smoking with friends and because, as she describes, it allows her to let go. She offers that she can quit whenever she wants. Jenny’s mom, however, feels there are further signs of a developing problem – Jenny doesn’t clean her room anymore as she routinely did and her grades are dropping.
