Strictly Bolshoi is truly entertaining. Conceived and shot by the infamous Ballet Boyz (former Royal Ballet stars, Michael Nunn & William Trevitt), they take the viewer on a compelling journey through the trials and tribulations of the creative process. We follow talented choreographer Christopher Wheeldon as he battles with the temperament of the Bolshoi ballet dancers, having to deal with their egos and amusing tantrums along the way. The Bolshoi Ballet is undoubtedly one of the greatest ballet companies and is the envy of every company the world over. Housed in the beautiful new Bolshoi Theatre in the heart of Moscow, the film gains unprecedented access to its studios, artists and traditions, capturing the pressures and demands that Christopher faces as he strives to create a ballet worthy of its dancers and the strict traditions they must observe daily, as artists and as a company.
Blending fly-on-the-wall footage as well as diary-cam confessions and interviews from some of the ballet world’s most illustrious figures, this film culminates in the broadcast of the ballet that Christopher choreographed for the Bolshoi, which the company performed in Moscow at its world premiere before bringing it to London to great acclaim. Featuring music 'Third Symphony' by Estonian composer Arvo Part, and some of the world's finest classical ballet dancers including the Bolshoi's own Nicolai Tsiskaridze and Maria Alexandrova, as well as Darcey Bussell in rare rehearsal footage of Wheeldon's most recent creation for The Royal Ballet, DGV.

This episode of Footnotes: The Classics of Ballet is about Swan Lake. Dancer Frank Augustyn and others discuss various aspects of the ballet Swan lake, beginning with its evolution from a failure at its first performance to its current status as a ballet classic. Drawing on their own performing experiences, the dancers discuss how the story can be made believable and compelling. They note changes in the choreography over time, particularly the increased importance of the male dancer. Advances in technical facility, exemplified by the thirty-two fouettés executed in the role of Odile by Pierina Legnani, are contrasted to the ballet's emphasis upon dramatic characterization, especially in the dual role of Odette/Odile. Performance excerpts (choreography by Yuri Grigorovich after Aleksandr Gorski, Lev Ivanov, and Marius Petipa) illustrate the discussion.

This episode of Footnotes: The Classics of Ballet is about Giselle. Dancer Frank Augustyn and others discuss the 19th-century Romantic ballet Giselle as an example of the importance of dramatic characterization in ballet. Drawing upon their own experiences of dancing the roles of Giselle or Albrecht, the interviewees explore different interpretations of these roles, pointing out how their human qualities help surmount the unrealistic scenario and establish emotional ties with the audience. Other topics include the technical demands on the dancer, the musical score by Adolphe Adam, and the qualities that make the ballet the epitome of the Romantic era. Performance excerpts (choreography by Leonid Lavrovski after Coralli and Perrot, staged by Yuri Grigorovich) illustrate the points in question.

This episode of Footnotes: The Classics of Ballet is about the Nutcracker. Dancer Frank Augustyn and others begin by examining some reasons why dancers dislike The nutcracker: its weak scenario, lack of dramatic characterization, ubiquitousness at Christmastime, and the sense that it shares in the modern-day commercialization of Christmas. They argue the pros and cons of new versions of the ballet, many of which attempt to give psychological relevance to the story. They conclude by acknowledging the ballet's perennial appeal, much of which derives from Tchaikovsky's score and the powerful response it creates in the dancer. Excerpts from a performance of Yuri Grigorovich's version of the ballet illustrate the discussion.
