Corps, created in 1985, is a macho piece with a recurring homophobic theme. A gang of men in most unflattering shiny black, slit-fronted bibbed and highly cut shorts, stamp, huddle and intimidate any couple who dance together. There are three girls who come in at different times: the first in white, the second, in grey and the third in black, and though the pas de deux were individually beautifully delivered, the piece also conjured up the feeling of animosity from the other men gathering from the background, ready to claim their own back into the ranks of male solidarity. However, as with van Manen’s works, one must cast off any thoughts of story-telling and enjoy the striking bodies of the dancers as they move in unison with the music.

Going to see Nutcracker with the whole family has been a tradition in other countries for many years. Now it is a tradition in the Netherlands as well. It became apparent that the Netherlands had also adopted this tradition in 1996, when the Dutch National Ballet presented its own version of the famous fairytale ballet. It is a magical production that has won the hearts of more than 250,000 people to date. Choreographers Toer van Schayk and Wayne Eagling created a Nutcracker for the children and adults of today. It is more dynamic and exciting, and less sweet than usual. They also chose to give a Dutch twist to their interpretation of the story, with skaters on the canals and a living room that transforms into a snowy forest. Unlike the original story, the production by Eagling and Van Schayk (who also designed the delightful sets and costumes) does not take place on Christmas Eve in a German town, but during St. Nicholas celebrations in Amsterdam, around 1810.

The 7th Symphony by Beethoven is often referred to as a 'dance symphony' and was described by Wagner as a 'grand apotheosis of the dance', but van Schayk hears in the music the voice of an almost obsessive idealism. Beethoven wrote his Symphony No. 7 between 1812 and 1813, the last years of the Napoleonic Wars, and the choreographer feels that it expresses the composer's ecstatic longing to reach the sublime future he was convinced lay ahead at the end of the dark period of the war. Music performed by The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducted by Bernard Haitink. A great admirer of George Balanchine, Hans van Manen was once told that Beethoven was one of the few composers whose work was impossible to choreograph. Van Manen rose to the challenge, creating Grosse Fuge to Beethoven's String Quartets, opus 133 in B flat major (Grosse Fuge) and the Cavatina from opus 130 in B flat major. The resulting work is an abstract ballet on van Manen's favourite theme - the tension and relationships between human beings. He once said, "As soon as I place two people in an empty room I express a mood or a relationship." Set Design - Jean-Paul Vroom, Costume Design - Hans van Manen, Musicians - Quartetto Italiano With a good deal of ironic and sometimes sarcastic humour eroticism and aggression between man and women are expressed in the Piano Variations choreographed on Prokofiev's Sarcasms Op. 17, to Satie's Gnossiennes Nos. 1, 2 & 3 and Debussy's Etudes No. 12, 2 & 4. In the interview with van Manen he talks about the Piano Variations and his ideas in choreography.
