Coast Zone, a video-dance collaboration between Merce Cunningham and Charles Atlas, was shot in the vaulted Synod House of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. The great spatial depth of the cathedral allows for the use of deep focus and camera mobility; dancers in the background are seen with equal clarity to those in the foreground. Extreme close-ups of dancers' faces contrast with the movement of those behind them to create a layering effect. Instead of presenting a "complete picture" of the dance, the camera moves gracefully and unobtrusively among the thirteen dancers, at one point circling the action one and a half times in a single, smooth trajectory; rarely does the camera shoot from a fixed position.Exemplifying Cunningham's idea that dancers operate autonomously, Coast Zone's choreography mirrors the fragmentary nature of its filmic technique. Soloists move within and are traversed by ensembles of two or three dancers that break off from one another and then reassemble, bringing to mind shifting sands or the ebb and flow of a coastline that the title of the dance and its music evoke. Larry Austin's composition "Beachcombers" is performed by John Cage, Martin Kalve, Takehisa Kosugi and David Tudor, setting the dancers to metallic clangs and a voiceover that quietly repeats the word "discordance."

Melange is a videodance by Merce Cunningham and filmmaker Charles Atlas, created over September 30 - October 2, 1999 during the filming of Atlas' documentary Merce Cunningham: A Lifetime of Dance. The videodance is comprised of a series of excerpts that alternate between the austere/minimal geometric spaces of INA Studios, Bry-sur-Marne, and the urban industrial landscape outside Les Frigos, an artists' squat-turned-contemporary arts complex in Paris' 13th Arrondissement. The scenes feature choreography that would later be incorporated into the dance titled Interscape (2000). The music is likewise comprised of selections from environmental sound recordings materials recorded for John Cage's Instances of Silence (1982).

Cunningham's Place (1966) had an unmistakably dramatic quality. His own role, in particular, was described as having something of the neurotic intensity of such dances as his Untitled Solo--an intensity that climaxed at the end of the dance as he got into a large plastic bag and thrashed about. The dance is the first example of Gordon Mumma composing for the company, with his contribution of Mesa: "a duo for bandoneon and computer." Mumma described the performance of this complex piece as a closely interdependent collaboration with David Tudor. Beverly Emmons, the company's lighting designer during the interim between the departure of Robert Rauschenberg as resident designer and the appointment of Jasper Johns as artistic advisor, made a set out of bits of wooden crates and newspapers. She also designed mini dresses of brightly colored acetate for the women to wear over their leotards. The film, shot and broadcast live during the Festival of the Arts Today held at SUNY Buffalo, is part of a program that included Scramble (1967) and How to Pass, Kick, Fall and Run (1965), as well as Place. It is the only known motion picture to capture the entire dance with the original cast. The feature opens during the intermission of the program with an interview with Merce Cunningham, wherein he describes his conception of the dance company as a collection of individuals that each form their own images, rather than a corps de ballet that collectively form a backdrop. He attributes the intensity that the dances evoke to the interdependencies that arise between the individual dancers within the dances. The performance follows seven minutes into the video.
