This presentation will provide a comprehensive look at failure modes and effects in bilayer all-ceramic crown-cement-tooth systems, tying together the influences on resistance to fracture initiation and propagation of ceramic material properties and thickness; crown/tooth geometry; cement modulus and layer thickness; damage induced by shaping, fabrication, clinical adjustments, and sandblasting; and fatigue in the wet intraoral environment. Some counter-intuitive findings will be addressed including changes in fracture behavior with different geometry and the influence of the compliant cement layer beneath stiff cores. Original research will be presented that studied the clinical behavior of over three thousand all-ceramic restorations. Life history and fracture rates were studied over twenty years in relationship to factors that might affect success. Factors such as tooth position, preparation, luting procedures and gender are significant to long term ceramic success.

The success of implant treatment in the aesthetic zone is highly dependent upon the careful prosthodontic management of the periimplant gingiva. An evidence based protocol will be discussed, outlining the fabrication of immediate, screw-retained implant provisional restorations in the aesthetic zone.
This protocol is designed to maximize the potential volume of the periimplant gingiva, minimize reconnections at the head of the implant, and increase the predictability of the definitive restoration.

The preparation visit begins the transformation. It also lays the groundwork for the success or failure of the seat visit. In this course, Dr. Rosenthal demonstrates minimal preparation techniques and provisionalization techniques to fabricate functional and esthetic provisionals. This course will cover the importance of the wax up and it’s necessity when doing minimal prep dentistry. It will cover important information that should be communicated to ceramists in order for them to provide beautiful consistent results. Dr. Rosenthal will design the provisionals on each side differently giving the patient a choice when it comes to the final result.
