Terry Malloy, the "seemingly soulless street survivor," unwittingly lures a rebellious longshoreman to his death in Budd Schulberg’s searing drama about the New York waterfront, the racketeering unions controlling it, and the kid who "could’a been a contender." cheese-eater=person who curries favor; ex-tanker, from tanker, a boxing match or other athletic contest that has been fixed; dive=intentional loss in a sporting event; Palookaville, from palooka, a person who is mediocre at their craft (originally a boxing term). Terry is walking along the pier. A cab pulls up and Charley calls to Terry to get in. Charley tries to ascertain that Terry will not talk to the Crime Commission. Even after offering him a promotion at the Baltimore docks, Terry can't give him any assurance. Charley pulls a gun on his brother, and begs him to make up his mind. Terry, shocked and feeling betrayed by Charley, blames him and Johnny for having destroyed his boxing career, making him into a failure. Charley, unable to take his brother to Danny D., tells him to get out of the cab.
