After helping to murder Becket, King Henry II is haunted by memories of their passionate friendship. Appointing Becket as Archbishop was the King's greatest mistake - for Becket finds his allegiance shifting from king and country to God and Church. Primate is a ceremonial title that indicates precedence among bishops. The Royal Hand was the tradition of the King selecting the nominee for Archbishop of Canterbury, who was then ratified by a supposedly free vote of the Bishops King Henry frets about the ceremony being held up at Becket's order. Becket tells them that a French uprising is at hand. The barons must protect the King until Becket's fresh troops arrive and secure the cathedral. King Henry fears this is God taking revenge for Henry's resisting the morning's duty. Letters from London inform the King that the Archbishop of Canterbury has died. King Henry is inspired to appoint Becket the new Archbishop, so his man will lead the Church. Becket is shocked, then insists this appointment will end their friendship. He could not serve God and Henry.
