"At Bishop Bronescombe Primary School in Cornwall, Year 5 and 6 pupils have been making animations of a poem, 'The Land of Counterpane'. The whole process has been captured on video by teacher Stewart Gynn. His video reveals the children's changing views of poetry and how their speaking and listening skills, as well as their teamwork, have improved. Boys in particular have become less reluctant to read poetry and are more motivated towards reading in general.
Stewart's video is shown in the programme. Stewart discusses it with headteacher Adrian Massey and AST literacy co-ordinator Sally Berry. Consultant Adrienne Jones asks why making stop-frame animation engages boys and how it helps to make poetry more concrete and accessible. What else was discovered about the way the children worked together? Stewart describes how holding the camera prevented him from stepping in, possibly too soon, in their process of discovery."

"Wouldn't it be great if teachers had the opportunity to produce their own videos and have them broadcast on Teachers TV?
Well, that's what Action! Teacher Video is all about; and in this episode you can see a video created by The Aveley School in Essex and called 'PRIDE'. Teacher Huw Derrick talks about the aims of the project and the research carried out. How did the students respond to the challenge of presenting to a professional ad agency? How did they interpret curriculum subjects as TV adverts and posters? What were the gains in their learning?
Presenter Xanthe Steen is joined in the studio by Huw, education consultant Adrienne Jones and teachers Alex Gibbons and Laura Harris, to discuss the project. They talk about the key issues of developing creativity, a relaxed curriculum, building self-esteem and confidence, and valuing the student voice. They also consider the wider implications of using Teacher Video for recording, assessment and CPD."

Readers in grades 3–6 present unique challenges and opportunities for teachers. Many intermediate readers can decode text well, but few have the skills required for the thick textbooks and complex literature they will encounter in the middle grades and beyond. Teachers need to guide students as they develop sophisticated strategies for tackling a variety of new text, while helping students cultivate the independence and self-reflection they need for reading success beyond the elementary grades.
Bringing Reading to Life is a series of four video programs filmed in Franki Sibberson's fifth-grade classroom. The eighteen classroom vignettes present a vibrant portrait of readers at work, delving into novels and nonfiction with ease and confidence, even as they grapple with the new demands of increasingly difficult texts. Franki and colleague Karen Szymusiak show the importance of thoughtful room design and classroom library layout, carefully structured reading groups, brief whole-class lessons, extended discussions that build on previous reading experiences, and individual reading in a wide range of texts.
Franki and Karen also demonstrate a multitude of teaching and learning strategies that help students in grades 3–6 thrive, including mini-lessons, conference and discussion techniques, reading notebook design and use, small-group structures and writing extensions, and read-aloud routines.

Educational Consultant: Robert Marzano Winner of the 2005 Telly Award — Bronze! Here's a DVD that helps teachers and other audiences understand what to do about students who are ill-prepared for classroom learning. Based on the best-selling ASCD book Building Background Knowledge for Academic Achievement: Research on What Works in Schools, this series of three programs on DVD introduces your school to research-based strategies for overcoming the deficiencies that hamper the achievement of so many students. Research expert Robert J. Marzano explains the importance of building background knowledge for all learners, especially for low-achieving students who tend not to have been exposed to the kinds of experiences necessary for academic success. Classroom scenes from a variety of subject areas and grade levels illustrate how to build students' background knowledge and help them overcome obstacles to learning. Interviews with cognitive neuroscientists and reading experts show how these strategies relate to how the brain naturally learns. Workshop outlines and learning activities in the accompanying facilitator's guide get everyone in your school focused on implementing practices that research shows result in greater student achievement. Use this series with teacher teams and other school groups to introduce key principles of research-based practice, such as Why direct teaching of certain vocabulary terms leads to higher academic achievement. Why sustained silent reading helps improve student understanding of content. Why indirect learning experiences — such as field trips and mentoring — give students better contexts for learning new content. Show your school how teams of teachers create classroom experiences that promote student learning. And provide your school with insights on how to close achievement gaps with effective vocabulary instruction, a sustained silent reading program, and teaching strategies such as nonlinguistic representation, projects, cooperative learning, and note taking. Users of ASCD's What Works in Schools framework for school improvement can use this video to take action on the key school-, teacher-, and student-level factors that influence academic achievement.
