'Sound Advice' takes a look at a novel and innovative way of giving lesson feedback to teachers.
"The key problem in giving feedback is that of immediacy. In the old days the system was to have a teacher sitting in the back of the room with a clipboard and then, hours or even days after the lesson, a debrief", says Ray Tarleton, Principal of South Dartmoor Community College.
But now the college has developed it's own wireless system with headsets and microphones to give instant feedback that can affect the course of the lesson as it is in progress.
It means that the teacher is a bit like a learner driver sitting in a car, with dual controls. They are not actually driving the car entirely on their own, they are being guided as they work.
Ray estimates that his new teachers reach their performance level several months earlier than they would have under the old system.

When Liz Owens took over as head teacher at Charles Dickens Primary School in London, the school was in special measures having failed inspection with problems in English, mathematics and science. Six years later, however, it had been transformed into one of the best schools in the area.
This turnaround, and in particular the huge improvement in results in English, was seen as partly the result of an exciting and innovative approach to literacy. Using drama, art and music as a way in to reading and writing, and involving a Nigerian artist from the Tate and a professional musician in residence as well as many links to local arts organisations, the whole curriculum is now felt to be more integrated, with the children of all backgrounds more motivated.

Carwarden House is a Special School with pupils aged from 8 to 19, all with learning difficulties. They needed an approach where the students wouldn't feel they were doing homework at all, and one tailored to differing needs. The maths games they developed seem to have done the trick, with over 80% of students now doing homework. The games have been designed to meet the objectives of the National Numeracy Strategy, with enough of them so that each student can have a different game for every week of the school year.

"Three years ago our Key Stage 2 scores were all below 50% and our Panda results were all E stars. Now our SATs results are all in the high 80s to 100%, and our Panda scores are As and A*. The biggest problem was disaffection amongst the pupils. Children didn't have an idea why they were learning, and this led to low morale", says Richard Gerver. "Now the children are excited by coming to school to work in their Grangeton' jobs, and can see a direct link between what they are being taught in the curriculum and its application in the real world."
"It's really good, we get to speak French, not a lot of people our age get to work in a café but we do and it's really good." Georgie, head waitress for the language café, aged 11.

Cardwell Primary School based in an South East London needed to change dramatically. Unofficially in special measures there was a lot that was wrong - the children had no idea of why they were in school and they didn't know what leaning meant. Headteacher Carol Smith turned the school's aggressive relationship with the community to one of "outstanding practice" How did she do it? By creating the Cardwell Wheel, which shows in each segment where improvements were needed and what was going to be done.
"This was a job I knew I couldn't do on my own, and I needed to get the help and support of other agencies. I thought the best way to do it was to create a visual representation so that everybody knows where their part fits in, including the staff in the school, and parents. Three and a half years ago nobody wanted to work at Cardwell. Now there is a waiting list. It's seen as an exciting and successful place to be." Carol Smith, Headteacher

There are 1100 students at Chestnut Grove Secondary and over 50 feeder primary schools. Katherine Cumberbatch came up with the idea of creating an interactive website to improve the transition.
Chestnut Grove has run summer schools in the past, usually 30 or 40 students. But the website has the potential of helping every student coming to Chestnut Grove. There are games, films of current students talking about life in school, and a virtual tour of the building. There is also a maths questionnaire, which is sent back directly to the maths teacher to use in the design of first scheme of work when the students start in September. "We launched the site in June 2004, and the immediate benefit we noticed was students were coming into Year 7 with folders full of work desperate to give them to their teachers." says Katherine Cumberbatch, assistant headteacher.
