Assessment & Lesson Observation captures the hopes and fears of two Primary NQTs, David Freeborn and Sandra Abdulai-Saani, as their teaching skills are put to the test in the second term of their induction year.
The programme provides insight into the typical problems that most NQTs experience during observations, and induction expert Sara Bubb advises on common pitfalls and how best to prepare for the follow-up meeting.
Both NQTs left their office jobs to take up teaching - David to train on a one-year PGCE and Sandra on a three year BEd. They each have Year 3 classes in South London primary schools. For David behaviour management has been the biggest challenge to date, for Sandra it has been differentiation.
The programme follows their assessment from the anxious preparation before the lesson to the frank discussions in the feedback session.
Discover if Sandra and David's observation lessons make the grade and help them pass their induction year.

With their Year 5 and 6 classes, challenges abound. There's a bigger, more in-depth curriculum to cover, Lucy has a class of almost all girls just reaching puberty and Jody has a class with difficult behavioural issues.
To add to these stresses, the end of year tests loom and both have to prepare pupils for their SATS and optional SATS. With these hurdles still to overcome, the summer holidays feel a long way off. Induction expert and TES columnist Sara Bubb, offers survival strategies and top tips.

"Oldknow Junior is one of the largest junior schools in the country with a five-form entry and over five hundred pupils on roll. This programme follows two NQTs embarking upon their first term of work.
Simrit Riat and Vicky Rutherford met as trainee teachers and now begin their teaching careers as colleagues and friends teaching Year 3. We'll see how they support each other and show how the school supports them. Oldknow Junior is a challenging inner-city school recently emerged from special measures. Most of the pupils are from a Pakistani or Bangladeshi background and almost all speak English as an additional language. Headteacher Bhupinder Kondal talks about the challenges that lie ahead for Simrit and Vicky and reveals her hopes and expectations for their first term as new teachers. Teaching consultant Sue Cowley takes a close look at Simrit in her Year 3 classroom and discusses with both NQTs some strategies for classroom organisation and behaviour management."

With the stress of the second term assessment behind them, Sandra and David focus on personal targets. For Sandra, this means ensuring she always has a plenary and for David, this means following every lesson with a self-assessment task for the children.
Discover if Sandra and David's continued efforts will be enough to get them through their first year.
