Finlay, a geography teacher, finds that administration tasks are the biggest challenge to his PPA time, so he delegates some of this to pupils. Michelle, a dance teacher, finds that a quiet space is the most useful weapon in the armoury of ring-fencing the time, but inevitably she also finds that distractions are not easily avoided.

Clare has set working with low ability groups as one of her targets for the year. She teaches six lessons a week to low ability classes in Year 8 and 9. During her PGCE year, Clare learnt about differentiation and catering to children's preferred learning styles, but putting the theory into practice is proving more of a challenge. Clare's induction tutor, Sarah Williams, is close at hand to offer her some advice and together they discuss strategies for improving Clare's classroom management.

Tracey is teaching science to a Year 7 group, where several of her pupils have special educational needs. Follow her as she plans her lesson to make sure all her pupils can take an active role.
We also follow Clare as she teaches a very mixed ability GCSE group. The group struggles with speaking French and working well together, but in a class where grades range from A* to G, discover how Clare makes sure she caters for all abilities.
